I was quite surprised to find Fuerth (pronounced fuert) but not even Nuremberg in ciao. So I started thinking, what can I tell you about it? Is there anything special?
I have been living just outside of Fürth (that's the way we spell it) for 15 years. I moved away. I moved back. I moved away again. And now I am back again since about 6 month.

But where exactly is Fürth? Well if you look at a map of Germany, you will find Bavaria in the South East of it easily enough. Now if look in the middl of the upper half and let your eye wander a little bit to the left, you shall stumble about Nürnberg/Fürth/Erlangen. These are three big cities which grew together on different corners.

HOW DO I GET THERE?
===================

FLY
Nearest airport is at Nürnberg/Nuernberg. From London Stanstedt you can get cheap flights, starting at 15€ one way with Air Berlin. The flight from London takes just over one hour.
From the airport you can take the underground into Fürth or Nürnberg.

TRAIN
Fürth has a main trainstation. From there busses go all around to the surrounding villages. Depending on which connection you get, it can take between 9 and 20 hours, fom London Waterloo Int.

CAR
If you don't mind to drive this is a perfect option. OVer Dover - Calais with the ferry and through Belgium it takes about 12 hours or more, depending on traffic. But you've got a car wih you to be more flexible. But tose weird Germans insist on driving on the right side of the street! So watch out!

OUT AND ABOUT
You get around quite good with trains and busses. But I dare say you need to know a bit of German then.
Much easier with a car Your own or eitehr rented. Europecar and Hertz being just a choice of car hires.

THE GERMANS
=============

In my opinion, specially in this area, they are not exactly overwhelming friendly. But if I am out and about with englsih visitors, a lot of them are friendlier.
Most people will speak at least a little bit of English. So yu can get around with having to speak German at all.

HISTORY
========

Fuerth got first mentioned in 1007 by King Heinrich II, but it already showed a big social life with churches, mills and connection to other villages that it seemed to get estalishe by 850.
In 1808 it became a city and by 1950 it had over 100.000 inhabitants. Currently there live about 112500 people in Fürth.

JEWS
=====

The first Jews settled down from 1440 . They had their own community with synagouge and cemetery. They were widely accepted and had a great impact on the city's development.

Nuremberg banished the Jews in 1449 and they were allowed to settle down in Fürth. The marquis of Ansbach hoped to weaken the Nuremberg city in an economically way.

At first the Jews were only tolerated, but soon they were integated in the community and they could grow. By the end of the 17th century they had founded a Talmud school for the training of new Rabbis. With that Fürth became the centre of the Euopean Jews.
At the beginning of the 19th century every 4th resident was Jewish.

But in the twelve years of national-socialist dictatorship the freedom and tolerance was dismissed as everywhere else in Germany.

Over the past few decades it became an important goal for the city to get a connection to the time of the peaceful cohabitation and not to forget about the suffering of the Jews.

One of the big steps were he opening of the Jewish museum in Fürth in 1999.

REGULAR EVENTS DURING THE YEAR
================================

end of September/October (around harvest sunday) - for two weeks there is a funfair (called kirchweih) within the city. it is one of the nicest around.

In the four weeks before Christmas is a Christmas market, starting on the week-end of the 1. Advent.

SIGHTSEEING
============

Fuerth has a few beautiful historic buildings which are worth a visit.
One of them is the Stadttheater - this theater is over 100 years old and has only recently gone through some restoration.

OTHER THINGS TO VISIT DURING YOUR STAY

OTHER THINGS TO VISIT
====================
Fraenkische Schweiz (Frankonian Switzerland) great for walking

FOOD
=====
If you ask my husband, food is always one of the most important things to explore in a foreign country. So I thought I list you a few things you might want to try out.

Karpfen gebacken - This is a fried 1/2 carp. This is only served from September to April. It usually comes with a potatoesalad and mixed salad.
Schäufele mit Kloß - A shoulder piece of pork served with a dumpling and mostly salad.
Fänkische Bratwürste - Frankonian sausages
Brezen - this you get at any bakery shop. Kind of bread, loved by mostly everybody as a snack inbetween. looks a bit liké pretzels
Lebkuchen- Gingerbread, mainly available around the Christmas time
Schneeball - mainly available in Rothenburg it is a fried pastry, made into a ball and can be bought with a choice of icing.

I have been working on this now for over two months. I hope I gave you a little insight of Fürth. I don't think that Fürth is something very special. So there is not a whole lot to tell about. But it does have some nice corners. And it is also a good basis for different places to visit within 1 hour drive.
If you have any questions, do not hestitate to contact me!

Thanks for reading!

A really interesting review....think Furth used to be twinned with the Scottish town of Paisley....maybe it still is! Pauline.
