This foundation/museum/park is in just next to Avenida Boavista in Porto. It has a local taxi rank next to it and plenty of bus stops. The entrance is hidden down a side alley but once you find it you will find yourself in a time warp.
The building is 1920s art deco mansion through and through. It has a rolling set of exhibitions of modern Portuguese artists such as Cargaleiro, Silva Vieira as well architects like Tomas Taveira. All of these are done with the original 1920s art deco furniture still in place.
This makes you appreciate the art not in clinical setting like the Tate Modern but in a situation where you could really admire it as a live in piece of art, in your bedroom or dinning room. It really shows the impracticalities of certain "celebrated" pieces of art like the dead cow or the dirty bed some people in the UK have taken to describe as art. However that is a debate to be had but this is not the time or the place.
The rooms are very large and very well naturally lit, another advantage over the Tate. During mid-week you will get the odd group of school children coming in as this place is near 4 large schools, however the neighbourhood is in the poshest area of Porto therefore you will find that they are well behaved and truly appreciative of the art. Rare thing nowadays.
The gardens are a fantastic visit. Part of them are done in an American/French chateau style, Part of them in a old English country house/palace style and part in a mediterranean style. All of these reflect the intetions of the Duque of Vizela who built and designed the house. They are surprisingly quiet and you will see many young couples and artists here. There are tennis courts on site and a club house that serves food and drinks at very cheap prices. A real oasis in the city.
Young children are welcome but there is not much for them to do so if your children are easily bored, avoid.
