About the artist
Miro passed away bin his 90th year in 1983 and is one of the great Catalan artists. Much of his work has links to Surrealism and abstract art, for me it his sculptures that are of particular interest and provide ... ...I would discount his paintings and drawings it is just that on the whole I find that the sculpture has more of a “wow” factor. Certainly it was the sculptures that most appealed to the children with the exception of the giant tapestry that covers a huge wall space and can be viewed from both ground level and also from a balcony where the sheer size and considerable weight can be appreciated.

Olympic Route
Barcelona held the Olympics in 1992 (who doesn't remember the song sang by Freddy Mercury and Montserrat Caballe), this was a great honor for Spain and for Catalunya and whole a new infrastructure was constructed in the city.
A must see is the Olympic stadium, at the top of Monjuic mountain. In this mountain you will also find "The FundacioJoanMiro" museum and the "Military Museum". The view from Monjuic is breathtaking.
Gaudi Route
Gaudi was a very famous architect at the beginning of the 20th century. His work falls in an artistic movement called Modernism. He was a pioneer in his era, his buildings break with all the standard constructions around Barcelona. One of his trade marks is the use coloured tiles to create great mosaics that cover the facades of his buildings...

Advantages: Warm, historical, architecture (Ga*di), beaches Disadvantages: Some attractions unsuitable for the less mobile
..., thank you!
In the name of balance, we also visited the Olympic Stadium which is situated at the Montjuic (complete with an umlaut although my keyboard resists this punctuation!). Also at this area is the exhibition area, wheere the fountains and light show for the 92 Olympics occurs every Thursday-Sunday during the summer. This is a sight to behold but beware, it does get exceptionally busy.
Also in this area is the FundacioJoanMiro (a museum which interests me none) and the Contemporary Art Museum (ditto). One museum worth a visit is the Picasso Museum (near the Cathedral) which charts the progress of Pablo's work from the early stages to the 1970's. It also has a good shop, I managed to get a couple of poster sized prints for less than a fiver for both.
I'd go back to Barcelona in a minute, if I wasn't so tired! I'd say...

Advantages: A great way to take in almost everything the city has to offer. Disadvantages: You will look like a right tourist!
..., switching constantly as they do from language to language. The commentary itself is pretty basic and changes from guide to guide. One guy was really quite funny. When one of the American tourists downstairs asked if Park Güell was worth visiting, he went off on a rant that sounded more like Basil Faulty doing stand-up than someone giving tourist advice. You had to be there I guess, but my husband and I were shaking with laughter upstairs. And he was right… We would have been total idiots not to visit. All the guides we came across were very pleasant and helpful.
