The GAA Museum is one of the best visitor attractions in Dublin. It highlights Ireland’s national games; Gaelic Football, Hurling, Camoige and Handball. In almost town and village in Ireland you will find a GAA club and in many parts the club is the focal point of community activities.

It combines the traditional elements of a museum, presentations on historic moments with interactive elements which ensures a fun and informative visit. One of the highlights is the test your skills area where you can try to score goals in hurling or football, test your balance or see how high you can jump to catch a high-ball. The exhibits are very well presented with interesting artefacts such as jerseys and medals from past masters of the sports. There are lots of technology elements with touchscreens for further information and several audio-video presentations on important aspects of the sports.

For those that aren’t familiar with the games, Gaelic Football is a cross between soccer and rugby with players running with the ball and scoring points or goals. It has similarities to Australian Rules and indeed each year an international series, which combines rules of the two sports takes place. Hurling has been described as the fastest field sport in the world, the game is somewhat similar to shinty and players use a camán, which is similar to a hockey stick, to score goals or points. Camoige is the female equivalent of Hurling and Handball is a bit like squash without the racquets.

The museum is located in Croke Park, which is the headquarters of the GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association). The stadium is in the middle of a transformation, which will see one of the most modern stadiums in Europe, an impressive achievement for an amateur sporting body. The museum is 15 minutes walk from the city centre, alternatively several buses (11, 16) go from O’Connell St and will stop quite near the stadium.
