Loads of grace at the old Galle Face

Advantages: colonial splendour, a very welcome retreat from a dirty old town
Disadvantages: Don't be absurd!

...long stretch of greenery called Galle Face Green. This is where Colombans come to fly kites, play football, have picnics and promenade in their finery on a Satruday night, - there are also some great food stalls selling a large variety of spicy snacks (known as short-eats). For the equivalent of about 20p you can get ten big ' uns to munch on as you stroll around.

After tea we decided to meander out onto the Green, our peaceful walk ...
...donate plenty of rupees for a school for blind orphans. Fortunately i had read about this ruse in my handy "Lonely Planet" guide and knew it to be a common Colomban con, so I told the greedy grifter in no uncertain terms to "eh -pah" (figure it out for yourselves, I know you can).......ha! I knew those well learnt Sinhala phrases would come in handy one day! He made a sudden speedy exit in the direction of another western looking ... more

Review of Galle Face Hotel

Value for Money

Quality of Rooms

Standard of Service

Quality of Food & Drink

Cleanliness

Quality of Facilities

Family Friendly

One of the most prestigious hotels in Sri Lanka.

Advantages: Extremly Affordable, Very High Standards, Professional Service, Family Friendly Atmosphere, A Secure Place.
Disadvantages: Might not be appealing of you arent into classical stuff.

Galle Face hotels is one of Sri Lanka's best hotels. First built in the late 1800's Century, and about 200 years later, it still has the old colonial splendor. Walking into the hotel for the first time in my life, the very professional service was what struck me at first. But then walking through those grand doors, it seemed as if I had travel back through time to when the British ruled Sri Lanka. From the furniture to the to the wallpaper, the management ...
...the view of the awesome Galle Face Green just makes you want to get out there and go for an early morning walk or jog along the seaside. The food is prepared by the best chefs in the industry and has the highest quality and safety standards. If you do visit Sri Lanka the Galle Face Hotel one place you have to stop by! ...

look at a few sri lankan hotels

Advantages: beautiful island
Disadvantages: busy main roads

to swim but there are miles of beautiful beach for walking Never book an island tour from UK you can do it so cheaply on your own. We hired an A/C minibus with driver for £12 a day and he also acted as a guide. This way you can take control of where you go and what you see. At Kandy the Hotel Suisse is colonial and we had the Mountbatten Suite for $56 half board. A lovely hotel with lots of character, good food, a really spectacular lounge and bar and fruit bats with 1metre wing spans in the trees. It was a differnt story nin Colombo where the Galle Face hotel boasts dozens of celebrity guests from the past but is a dirty, crumbling heap. We lasted 1 night there! The Kadelama hotel in Dambulla takes the prize - modern and built into the rocks with spectacular views of the lake, it is all chrome, marble and elegance. A big treat ...

Review of General: Sri Lanka

It's not just another crowded Asian city

Advantages: Relatively modern, decent facilities, reasonably clean
Disadvantages: Chaotic traffic, little night-life

and Crescat Boulevard malls. Colombo has of late also been fortunate (?) to attract the usual American fast-food chains. You can therefore indulge yourself at Mcdonalds's, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Domino's Pizza to your heart's content. If you're feeling more adventurous, Colombo has numerous fine restaurants, with the Duplication Road in Colombo 3/4 having a very good selection. As it turns out, you could probably find very good restaurants serving food from the major cuisines of the world, but good quality Sri Lankan food is often hard to find. The night-life in the city is confined mainly to the night-clubs in the five-star hotels mentioned earlier. Apart from these and bars in the hotels themselves, there is very little by way of quality night-life, though a stroll along the sea-front on Galle Face Green is highly recommended! As far as ...
