Viewed from the outside, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele invitingly gives the impression you should explore within.
We saw it from the Duomo (Cathedral) Square and after the `oohs and aahs' took the inevitable photos before we even looked at the guide book to see what it was. It is that type of building.
Go in we did! What magnificent architecture! As you walk along you step into the old world of stylish Milan. The little boutique shops are a delight as are the cafes set amid the grandeur. A lasting memory will be the beautifully set tables; lovely colour combinations with neat table settings. Delightful.
In the centre, the transepts, where the four arms of the arcade meet ,we mingled with others on a huge map of Milan city on the floor. I looked up several stories and experienced the most fantastic paintings and glass work in the domes above.
While standing here you get a glimpse down the gallery to the Leonardo da Vinci statue just outside, in a little open square.
On our second visit I looked back behind me, towards the Duomo, and to my surprise saw an ancient and creative clock high above the archway door. I'd missed it the day before as I was so absorbed with all I was seeing in front of me.
When in Milan, pop in to the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele, it adds to your visit to the Duomo and all there is to see around about. Take the well planned and operated underground to Duomo station and then it is only a few steps to the gallery.
Watch out for the pigeon-feeding, camera-toting sharks who want to relieve you of your well-earned Euros.
