Galleries of Justice (Nottingham)

... However I would like to think it is the result of my visit to yet another of the country's fascinating museums, a most unusual and perhaps a most unique museum devoted to policing, justice and law and order, a spine chilling reminder of what happened to anyone who broke the law, a museum called: ... Crime & Punishment - An Arresting Experience!

Advantages: Interesting Factual Historical and Atmospheric
Disadvantages: Limited access to wheelchairs and push chairs

...law, a museum called: The Galleries of Justice.

I love acting the tour guide pointing out the interesting things I know about the city not to mention the fact I love history. Having heard many positive things about the museum, I was looking forward to the visit and the prospect of discovering new and interesting facts and I was taking with me a visiting friend and his son in what I hoped to be an interesting afternoon.

THE BUILDING
Nottingham sits upon an intricate series of caves within a range of red sandstone cliffs with many buildings utilising these caves. Nottingham's Old Shire Hall is one and rests upon the brow of the cliff descending down into and against the sandstone creating an unusual stronghold of courts, suites and the old County Gaol. ... more

Disadvantages: Might not keep your toddlers happy for long.

...experiences we can have. The Galleries of Justice do not let anyone down in this department, although they are very careful to make this experience is as authentic as is possible. This is very much a hands on experience that is fun for all ages. Our guides for this adventure are the scary warder ,who keeps his character going throughout the visit, and you very soon realise that having to deal with this man back then would have been far from a ...
...the visit to the police galleries located in the building next door, and yes, this was also a working building until the court closed its doors. On entering here you will be met by a policeman in a costume befitting 1905.I was arrested, read my rights and then fingerprinted.( you can take this home!) Some of the people were then given sentences......one woman was sentenced to Laundry duty, Phew...glad it wasnt me!I hate washing at the best of times ...

Money for Old Rope?

Advantages: Excellent insight into three hundred years of crime and punishment, centrally located
Disadvantages: Layout can be a little confusing, some areas may have limited opening hours

The Galleries of Justice, in the heart of Nottingham's Lace Market is considered to be one of the town's premier visitor attractions. It is situated just a few minutes walk from the main shopping areas and is well sign-posted whether walking around town on foot, or driving into the city. There has been a court on this site since the 14th century, and there was also a prison from 1449 to house Nottingham's rogues and vagabonds. The court rooms were ...

Overall we had a very enjoyable time at this attraction. The tour ...

Also 2 football stadiums not to far away from each other. A train station. Nottingham Air Port. They is a cinema not far from the bus station. They is a 24/7 gym in the shopping center. Going Underground

Advantages: An insight into medieval city life
Disadvantages: tour too short

to believe that the 1968 vision was to cement in the medieval caves to build this modern shopping centre above. Thankfully, historical societies intervened and as such residents and visitors to Nottingham can still go underground and experience Nottingham from centuries ago - in this part of town at any rate. The attraction of the City of Caves has been affiliated with the Galleries of Justice, and until recently it was possible to buy joint tickets. Recently that is no longer the case and a ticket to the City of caves attraction will set you back around £5.50 for an adult ticket with concessions costing £4.25 and family tickets also available. We arrived just a couple of minutes before the tour was due to depart, on a Sunday afternoon. Closing time is 430pm with the final tour departing 30 minutes before that. Personally I do not ...

Northern charm southern sophistication

Advantages: Easy going laid back atmosphere
Disadvantages: ye goin aht dook??

of the time. I personally prefer shopping in smaller specialist places, the service is better, and you are more likely to be served by someone who knows about fashion than a 4 pounds an hour schoolgirl who thinks Blazin' Squad are the epitome of style. Nottingham has these places too, but they take time to find but it is definitely worth it. For stuff to do, Nottingham again comes up a winner. If you are interested in history or the law, or like me both then the Galleries of Justice offers a great tour with gruesome details of punishments and entertaining role players you will come out never again taking for granted our advancements in civil rights. Then there is the Castle, and the Tales of Robin Hood where you learn all about the famous legend of England's first socialist. Nottingham is actually one of the few places inland and devoid ...
