A must visit location!!
Advantages: Superb Wildlife Disadvantages: Very very hot!!
...twice now and have visited Abuko twice. It is a beautiful place with lots of wildlife and birds. It isn't that far from many of the tourist hotels, so is well worth spending a few hours there. It is very cheap to get in - about £1 when I went. The taxi ride there was about £4 but this is always negotiable in Gambia.
Upon arrival the guide took us around at our own pace as we had arranged the visit ourselves, not through the tour operator (Which ... ...and crocs. The hut in Abuko near the lake is also very peaceful and a great spot to spend a hour bird watching. A list as long as your arm of birds can easily be seen in this time!! This cost us about £5 but the guide was happy with any amount and didn't give a fixed amount we had to pay.
There are some small stalls within the park that sell hand made items like hats, wooden animals and material bags. These are all very cheap but very well made. ...

Birds Birds birds
Advantages: Variety of birdlife seen Disadvantages: felt a bit like a zoo
I visited the nature reserve as part of a trip organized by the gambia experience. It was a half day trip and included couch travel to the reserve, a guide to show you around the reserve and also a birdchart and checklist were given out at the start. Our guide first took us into a hide overlooking a lake but due to the large amount on the trip it meant we had to wait for seats to become available in order to get a look at the wildlife. It was well ... ...especially of the crocodile who surfaced! We set off again along the path through the reserve, only trouble was again that there was only one guide who was up front and naturally wasnt able to answer the questions or stop for anyone along the way to have a look at the wildlife (the reason we were all there!). It did feel a bit like being hered around a zoo more than a nature reserve. There were a few caged animals inside the reserve which I found ...
