For my third opinion on Ciao.uk I will talk about my little French town, Gap.
Gap is in the south-east of France, in the Alps. About 100km south of Grenoble and about 150km north of Marseille. So we have Mountain to the north and “la Provence” to the south. The town count about 35 000 inhabitants. It is the main town of the “departement Hautes-Alpes”. Our region is called “provence alpes côte d’azur” .
The English word “gap” could be a quite good definition of Gap-the-town, because Gap is nothing more than mountain. Here it is the principal leisure. A wonderful leisure but almost the only one. And generally people who come here for tourism don’t stay in Gap but in the little villages there is all around the city, and which are more in the mountain.
So if you come in Gap, please don’t look for a museum or an historic monument. The only one you will find is the house where Napoleon slept during a night… But the centre is quite pretty, the houses are painting in different colours, in a pleasant style, sometimes classic, sometimes modern. There is some shop, and during the summer the pubs of the “place Jean Marcellin” are very pleasant. I think Gap is a friendly town.
During the summer don’t forget your mountain shoes, your mountain bikes, and your sun glasses. There is also climbing sites. Every morning when I wake up, I see the famous Cëuse cliff. It is one of the biggest, and one of the hardest. (The American climber Chris Sharma went here to climb “Biographie” one of the hardest climbing way ). Windsurfing or sailing is also possible near of Gap, in Serre-Ponçon a quite big lake.
The winter’s leisure: There is plenty of ski station near of Gap. So here it is possible skiing or snowboarding. But there is some other snow activities.
Gap has one of the beautiful climate. We have about 300 days in the sunshine! The “gapençais” (gap inhabitants) live outside, so when it is raining we don’t know how to live and what to do. (It is a caricature but it is almost the reality). In Gap, the winter is quite cold (enough for snow) but the summer is quite hot (about 28 to 35°c). I really love this climate.
Even if Gap is a little town the animations are growing up. There is music festival, a theatre with a quite good programming. There is also an interesting choice of sports. Football, handball, rugby, basketball, volleyball, martial art, gymnastic, and I forget a lot of activities. I even do circus!
In Gap we can do a lot of sports, but the culture is missing. For culture and even for study in university we have to go in a bigger city like Grenoble or Marseille.
