Travelling to big cities indeed has its perks, i.e. the shopping, the museums, the nightlife, but sometimes one needs a proper getaway. A getaway where you completely forget the hectic life you lead, the materialism of the world, your neighbour's outrageously loud music, etc. etc. Allow me to be so bold as to suggest the little-known but much loved Garmisch-Partenkirchen for such a getaway....
The moment you arrive in this dreamy town, you'll be transported to a different world. This world (at Christmas time) is one of cobblestone streets bathed in festive lights, and filled with the soothing smell of mulled wine, or Glühwein. The Zugspitze towers over the town like a magical wizard, frosted in snowy whiteness.
In summer, Garmisch Partenkirchen takes on a whole new albeit equally pleasing character. The mountains seem to move closer to the town, inviting its people to spend their days hiking -in what we could all use more of- 100 % pure, fresh air. The towns' streets are filled with tourists, which provide an exciting buzz in the air.
Truth be told, Garmisch-Partenkirchen will charm you.
To soak up even more magic here are a few tips:
Cafes: Be sure to visit Cafe Knightinger in Partenkirchen and Cafe Kröner in Garmisch. You might just experience the best torts/cakes of your life here.
Restaurants: Partenkirchen is filled with old-fashioned Bavarian restaurants. Don't worry too much about hit or miss, they all have an excellent standard of quality.
Nightlife: Ok, Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a little lacking in this department, but if you just fancy a decent beer and a chat then check out the town's only Irish Pub for some time well spent. Don't miss the live band:)
