I've just returned from Thailand were I flew from London to Bangkok on Garuda Indonesian Airways. I was a little nervous when my partner told me we were flying Garuda, as I usually prefer to fly with BA. We had booked 2 seats in their premium economy cabin. We arrived at Gatwick airport where I could see a very clean Garuda 747-400 parked at the gate. We boarded the flight and were greeted with lots of smiles from the cabin crew. Our seats were in the upper deck of the aircraft. The premium economy seat is a true business class seat. They provide 40" seat pitch, very wide and extremely comfortable. The cabin crew were extremely attentive and provided us with pre take off orange juice and hot towel. A full safety demonstration was provided and we received a warm greeting from the pilot. The take off was perfectly smooth, everything the crew did prior and during the flight made me feel very safe. The flight was through the night, and on other airlines service usually suffers on a night crossing, not on Garuda! The cabin crews were periodically passing through the cabin with soft drinks. There was a "raid the larder" facility, if you wanted to eat at any time. The meal service was provided on china, with a tablecloth placed on your seat back tray. There was 3 choices of main meal, starter was served first, then followed by main course, and dessert. The quality of the food was good, unlike other airlines I've flown. Each seat had a personal TV moniter located in the arm of the seat. There were 8 channels showing movies, sitcoms radio and a satelite map showing the current location of the aircraft, altitude etc. Their was also a main screen at the front of the cabin, showing a movie, and for a short time it would show you the view from various cameras on the outside of the aircraft. This was my first flight were I felt comfortable enough to sleep for the majority of the journey, and I felt completely refreshed on arriving at Bangkok. The same can be said of the return journey. I would strongly recommend Garuda premium class for all those who are tired of being cramped in cattle class on other airlines, and don't want to take out a small mortgage on a business class seat. ...the past 10 years and Garuda gave me nothing to complain about. I would not hesitate to fly with them again and indeed I have booked a flight to Amsterdam later in the year. Garuda were offering a special price on this particular flight - I was able to ring them and book my seat and all the additional requirements (vegetarian meals and an aisle seat) and then nip across the road to my travel agent. I simply quoted the booking number given to me by ... ...to Garuda and all I had to do was turn up at the airport early enough to collect my tickets before check-in time. This is one of the smoothest ticket purchases I've ever made - convienience all the way!!
The staff are to be commended for the way they dealt with the various circumstances during the flight. Apart from the passeger who was taken ill, a couple of passengers had young children and required assistance that was readily provided; and there ...

I'm told that Australians use Garuda as a cheap way of getting to Bali which is a similar holiday destination to the Balearics for Brits! I can see how a short trip would be relatively painless, unless you were unfortunate enough to be on one of the Garuda crafts that have been in minor accidents/failures over the years!
We booked a relatively expensive holiday with Kuoni, known for their high quality award winning long haul holidays. All the Kuoni ... ...ruined when we had to get back on one of these hideous Garuda flights for another 18 hours to get home!
I'd definitely advise anyone to pay the extra hundred or so pounds to fly with an alternative airline, it makes such a big difference when flying long haul. ...

Advantages: cheap,excellent service, plenty of spaces Disadvantages: they crash quite often
I have travelled with garuda on numerous occasions - I first used them due to their rock bottom priced fares. I flew around the world taking in the Far East, Hawaii & the States - the best feature was the fact the flights were only ever half full!! - plenty of room to stretch out and move around and relatively peaceful - unlike the manic BA flights I have used. The staff were great with nothing too much trouble - unlike the surly BA cabin crew I ...

Advantages: Friendly cabin crew Disadvantages: Lack of punctuality,inflight cuisine not outstanding.
I have flown on Garuda on flights between Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta and on the Pekan Baru-Singapore sector. On all occasions I have flown economy class and generally have not been too impressed. The aircraft fleet although modernised in recent years is not as modern as,eg, SIA or MAS. I cannot vouch for standards of maintenance but friends of mine who are aircraft engineers do not place the Indonesian airline at the top of the league.
The in flight ... ...rather than distinguished. The seating arrangements were OK and there is a reasonable amount of leg room. The flight attendants are courteous,smiling and attentive to passenger needs.and I consider generally the in flight service to be fairly good. Punctuality does seem to be a problem-a number of flights to Singapore from Indonesia were subject to delays. ...

Advantages: cost effective Disadvantages: bad reputation
I flew Garuda in October 97, one week after the crash in Dempasar killing all on board. Needless to say, I was quite nervous about the whole experience, especially for such a long journey. I found that the whole experience overall was great (one of the better flights I have taken!). The food was very good - a choice of continental and indonesian and the service was very good. We also did not experience any delays.
