Advantages: Beautiful City, Great Food, Wonderful Museums, Close to Alps Disadvantages: Too Many Tourists In The Summer
of first-rate enclosed and open-air food markets in the city. The Viktualienmarkt, Munich's oldest and largest open-air market, is little short of a Foodie-Paradise, with no less than 22,000 square metres of cheese, fresh fruit, seafood, and countless local beers and sausages to sample, as well as flowers and handcrafts. A couple of other exceptional markets include the Dallmayr & the Elisabethmarkt, named after an Austrian Empress. Much levity surrounds the Elisabethmarkt's so-called 'Milch-huette', or 'Milk Hut', originally founded to provide an alternative to alcoholic beverages, and to keep public drunkenness in check, but since converted into a rather rowdy beer-garden?
ATTRACTIONS: Rowdy beer gardens aside, one of Munich's greatest attractions is the EnglischerGarten, a wonderfully extensive, all-round open space near the cities ...

Advantages: Thought Provoking Disadvantages: Very long

The terrorist group known as Black September stormed the Israeli apartments, took 9 hostages, and shot two men dead. Whilst the games went on around them, the terrorists demanded the release of hundreds of prisoners from Israeli jails as well as the release of two Germans being held in Germany. Israel refused to bend to the demands and later that night the remaining hostages were all killed in a bungled rescue bid held at Munich airport.
This event happened many years before I was born, but the shock of it has meant that it has never been forgotten. I first became aware of the events of that night whilst watching the brilliant documentary, 'One Day in September' that I saw on a flight to South Africa. Other ...
