If you are staying in the area, drop by and have a look, take some photos and soak up the atmosphere. If you are feeling flush and can deal with the juxtaposition of filfth and finery, posh and poverty, then drop into the Taj Hotel and get an expensive afternoon tea and look at the Arch out of the windows or take a stroll up the road to the government craft emporium.

But if you aren't staying nearby, would you sit in a taxi for an hour and a half (typical for a visit from one of the hotels out by the airport) just to get there - probably not.

The India Gate in Delhi - similar style, another one you can happily snap out the window of your coach. Call me a philistine but there's a touch of 'Arc de Triomph' about the lot of them. As India's great attractions go, this is one I can take or leave. There's such a lot that you really MUST see and the Gate of India is no Taj Mahal - in this case, I mean the eternal monument to love and not the hotel!

But all is not lost. If you find yourself at the gate and can't deal with the hussle and bustle then head inland a block or two. The area around the gate includes some absolutely fabulous buildings - real gems of Victorian grandeur a la Manchester Town Hall - so drop back a block or two from the sea, you'll get less hassle and see some beautiful buildings.

Pros - it's old, it's free, it's next to the Taj hotel, you can have a look at the murky sea
Cons - it's just another big old arch.
