This "Gendarmenmarkt" is the square where you find this Dome plus another Dome, called the French Dome. There´s a lovely theatre in the middle, originally built by Mr. Schinkel, a famous theatre producer of the last century.
The best time to visit this square is in the evening, because it has got a very exclusive atmosphere at sunset and early night. Every building is covered in beautiful lights and the atmosphere is really exciting.
Lots of cafes,also for sitting outdoors, give you the atmosphere of being on holiday even if you have to work.
A great festival is once a year, the "Classic- Open- Air" usually in July.
And if you want to have a very exlusive place to stay: have a night in the Dorint, an exlusive design hotel on Gendarmenmarkt. You can go there for conferences as well as they offer about 252 sqm of conference rooms (as I experienced myself).
I can´t tell how much it is as my company paid for it, but I think it´s not the cheapest around....but if you go for a cheap hotel don´t go to the Gendarmenmarkt, that´s all I want to say...

There are two Sofitel hotels in Berlin, and this review is for the Dorint Sofitel Schweizerhof, not the Dorint Sofitel am Gendarmenmarkt. Both are part of the Accor hotel chain.

The Schweizerhof can be found on Budapester Straße. It is extremely well located, being between the Tiergarten (south-west corner of the park), the zoo and aquarium, the Europa Centre and the shops on Kurfurstendamm. The nearest station is Zoologischer Garten (800m distance), or it is an easy cab ride from Tegel Airport (8km) or Tempelhof Airport (10km). There is a bus stop right outside the hotel for route 200, with other routes nearby. There are usually cabs waiting outside the hotel and there is a car park under the hotel (which isn't too cheap - about ?18 per day).
