Five Star Luxury At A Three Star Price

Advantages: Superb accomodation. Brilliant food. Excellent facilities. VERY friendly owners.
Disadvantages: Not a thing!

~ ~ One of the problems of going on holiday is you can never be 100% sure that the accommodation you have booked is going to live up to expectations.
The Internet has improved things, because now you can log on and check out your selected hotel or guesthouse before you actually part with any hard earned dosh. (Well, most of the time anyway)

~ ~ But even then you can be caught out, if the hotel is slightly less than ethical, ...
...different to the reality.
We got badly caught out in 2001, when a hotel we booked as part of a package holiday in Tuscany, Italy, turned out to be only slightly better than a pokey wee bedsitter.
So the mad cabbie was determined that the same mistake would not reoccur in 2002, on the family holiday to Kitzbuhel in the Austrian Tyrol.
We checked out all the travel agents, and eventually decided on Inghams, a UK based company. ... more

The Heart of Europe

Advantages: spectacular scenery, history and culture, great people, good food
Disadvantages: crowded in July and August, in winter during X-mas

Everybody has heard of the pop-stars Falco and DJ Ötzi, the great composers Mozart and Haydn, has seen the film on the Trapp family, "The Sound of Music", has seen the great mountainside when skiing in winter or hiking in summer, everybody has his clichés on this small country in the heart of Europe… Yes, I do know, that there was this governor of the province of Carinthia by the name of J. Haider, whose racist comments have found their way ...
...declining fast and the party which he used to lead has proven that they can do without him when looking back at almost two years of successful political work in a coalition with the conservatives. So, what else is there about Austria: well, lots of history and I mean it. The Hapsburgs have ruled it for six centuries and influenced the culture of central and eastern Europe. You will think about them when visiting Schönbrunn Palace or the Hofburg ...

More than Mozart, Haider and Arnie

Advantages: Diversity
Disadvantages: You might find Austrians a bit stand offish

Austria is a country that I have fallen in love with, ever since I was plunged headlong into a valley to be an English Teacher (although the way I describe it here, makes it sound more like a bungie jump!) Most people know very little about Austria, other than having heard of Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbrück, and having heard of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nikki Lauda, Sachertorte and anti-freeze in wine. That was until February 2000, when Jörg Haider's ...
...government. Overnight the country was made into a pariah by the EU, and whilst sanctions have been removed, the threat of Haider still remains. In the West, in the Vorarlberg, the Tirol and Salzburgerland, Austria boasts some of Europe's finest skislopes, with world class resorts, including St Anton and Saalbach-Hinterglemm, not to mention Innsbrück, twice an Olympic Games host. Salzburg is right on the border with Germany and is probably known ...

Plenty of edelweiss

Advantages: scenery
Disadvantages: bad weather

Austria is an attractive country. It is difficult to find unattractive bits but Linz is a rather industrial city on the Danube. If skiing is not your cup of tea the summer is probably the best time to visit the Alpine areas. Cheap acc. is plentiful then. The walking is excellent and the chair lifts are fun and take the toil out of hiking. It can rain a lot in the Tirol in August however. Salzburg is an interesting city with some v. nice beers and ...

Breathtaking scenery

Advantages: Great scenery, Great Food
Disadvantages: None

Do you like fresh air, mountain views, long walks or skiing then this is the place for you. Austria is one of those places which in many ways hasn't changed for years. The locals are friendly (usually) and very hospitable and the food makes an interesting change from your normal English style resorts. Its a great place for interesting soups - you probably would not believe the things they serve up in beef stock. And of course is a great place to ...

Zuus

Advantages: Very quite and was able to get a good rest
Disadvantages: In the middle of nowhere and could be difficult to get to

Zuus is a small village located in Austria. We stayed here for one night for an overnight stay. I must say that the accommodation was excellent. We had a massive room which had a double bed in a sitting area and a kitchen. We paid £25.00 each and this included breakfast. in my opion this is a bargin and would reccomend this to anyone thinking of staying for a short amount of time in Austria. The Village it's self was very pretty and had many vine ...

A perfectly acceptable carrier

Advantages: good service, good choice of routes, large no. of partners in Star Alliance
Disadvantages: bad personal experiences regarding baggage

, with the stewardesses all being very polite, helpful and friendly. The in-flight snack (a salmon roll and a drink) was adequate for a short flight, it only being a 55 minute flight to Belfast City airport. The flight magazine was nothing outstanding although for such a short flight (what a passenger might call a SUSseD flight ? ?Straight Up Straight Down?) it was perfectly adequate. This being an internal flight, there was no duty free in flight and there was little time to do anything on the flight. Being part of the Star Alliance Group, BMI looks like it will become a more popular choice for me, as the Star Alliance includes Lauda Air, Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa, which are the three airlines which I use the most in general, being based in Austria and with Frankfurt being my nearest hub airport. There are some 15 or so partners in the Star Alliance ...

Short but sweet

Advantages: An good race
Disadvantages: on an average track

Atmosphere ---------- If you are used to excitable fans, flocking crowds and general razamatazz that follows formula One, then Austria draws a sharp contrast to your expectations. The circuit in Spielberg, Austria, known as the A1 ring, is far from being the most exciting place on earth. Despite producing world champions (Jochen Rindt and Nikki Lauda) the fans do not seem to be that interested in Grand Prix racing. The circuit is never sold out. This is a shame when you consider countries are crying out to hold one of these prestigious events. The grandstands are half full and its had to get the crowd interested. Layout ------ It is a very short lap at A1. It takes only about 70-75 seconds a lap compared to 80-100 seconds at some circuits. Its more like a go Kart track. Essentially it is 3 main straights, interconnected by ...

Banks and stamps but no station or airport!

Advantages: Quiet, peaceful, copious banks and stamp shops
Disadvantages: Not a throbbing metropolis, and pricey with it!

afterwards set me back CHF 26.50 at Café Amann (Aeulestrasse 56) ? ca. EUR 18 for which I would have got a far better lunch over the border in Austria. In hindsight I would have done well to have consulted www.gastroguide.li ? which has listings, including price classes for eateries throughout Liechtenstein as well as just over the Austrian and Swiss borders. Cafés were generally pricey ? for coffee I was paying over the odds in comparision with Vienna. I had originally looked at staying overnight in Vaduz, but the range of accommodation was not that outstanding and for the price at which it was offered, I chose instead to stay in Austria, choosing instead to head onto Bregenz on the shores of Lake Constance. Similarly the chance of throbbing nightlife in Vaduz was pretty remote ? it seems that there is very little for the (not-so-) young to do ...
