General: Bhutan

I suspect that a lot of people haven't even heard of this tiny Himalayan kingdom and that would be fair enough. Don't beat yourself up if you don't know Bhutan - most people can't find it on a map so you're not alone. Tucked away in the Himalaya, sandwiched between Tibet and India, and strictly ... Bhutan - an A to Z of a Lost Kingdom

Advantages: Spectacular scenery, stunning architecture, weird stuff
Disadvantages: A bit over-sanitised and unreal - like Disney does Asia

I suspect that a lot of people haven't even heard of this tiny Himalayan kingdom and that would be fair enough. Don't beat yourself up if you don't know Bhutan - most people can't find it on a map so you're not alone. Tucked away in the Himalaya, sandwiched between Tibet and India, and strictly controlling who comes in and who goes out, the Bhutanese adopted a tactic that reminds me of Douglas Adams' creation, the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal. ...
...as a "mindboggingly stupid animal" which assumed that if you can't see it, then it can't see you. By looking inwards and ignoring the outside world, Bhutan has long been hiding in plain sight.

So where should I start to write about such a bizarre place? As Julie Andrews would say 'Let's start at the very beginning'.......(with apologies that this is a very long review)

In the Home of the Thunder Dragon

Advantages: The country, the people
Disadvantages: Some of the accommodation

"But the real question is:" my dad said, "Did you find him?" "Who?" "The young man who ran away to become a monk…" "…because the yaks keep falling off the mountain and your dad shouts at you" I finished with him, smiling. I was surprised he remembered. That was the start of it. A television programme some 20 or 30 years ago about this fascinating country in the Himalaya, where being a monk was still an occupation of choice, where travel was difficult, ...
...myth and history. That was it. I wanted to go to Bhutan. Years passed, and the dream trip lay simmering somewhere buried in that maelstrom of unvisited places that forms the focus of my ambitions. I went to Nepal. I read Seven Years in Tibet. Then, there it was, hidden on the website, not greatly drawing attention to itself. Walking in the Himalayan Kingdom. I had to go. ~ Not everything on this trip went according to plan ~ but the total experience ...

Tiger Tiger Burning Bright

Advantages: It's a beautiful iconic image of Bhutan
Disadvantages: It's a long hard walk to get there

such an inaccessible place. For the benefit of those who always ask, even when it's already clear let me put it in capitals - THIS IS NOT AN ATTRACTION FOR THOSE WITH LIMITED MOBILITY. Actually, if I'm brutally honest, Bhutan is not a country for those with limited mobility. We had 20-30 years advantage over most tourists in Bhutan but we still struggled. Now I know that there is a member on the site (Hi Hiker!) who has been to the Tigers Nest and my guess is that she probably ran up and down without breaking a sweat but for those of us with a history of knee problems, it's not a stroll in the park. Just to make it more tricky, the monastery is generally visited near the beginning of a visit to Bhutan due to its proximity to the country's only airport, so many visitors will still be acclimatising to the altitude and the reduced oxygen ...

Slumming in Bumthang

Advantages: Enlightening, beautiful, interesting...
Disadvantages: ...the Hotel!

going to spend there ~ and (all things being equal) how much of that asleep & oblivious. We opted to stay put. The question, then, was whether Jakar in particular and Bumthang in general could redeem itself. TSECHU After dinner we headed down the dark lane towards the festival ground. This was the first night of the local Tsechu. The Tsechu (sometimes spelt Teschu) is an annual commemoration held in honour of the saint Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. They are held at all monasteries and dzongs throughout the country and follow much the same form, but they are held at different times of the year depending upon where you are ~ which suggests that in this, as in other arena, Buddhism has pragmatically adopted local festivals which predate the arrival of the faith. In Jakar this falls in the autumn ...
