Visiting Cyprus in July, at peak summer is ..what's the word..very, very, very hot. I was there last year and got burned in the sun. Could not get an air conditioned car for hire. Water is a precious commodity. The good thing is that the island is small. You can drive to the sea in any direction (i was based in Nicosia). It worked out to be quite an expensive holiday of around £1200 for 2 persons including car hire (w/o aircon, no radio.cassette), food, petrol, water, etc. It makes a change from the normal European climate to the mediteranean one. The best time was when we visited Aphrodite's Rock near Limassol and the ancient roman castle. Another highlight was the Trodos Mountains. This was really a good place to go to. It is located at the centre of Cyprus. The atmospere gets cooler at you reach the highest peaks in Cyprus which are accessible by road. In the Trodos Mountains, do not miss the Ancient Monastery of Kykkos. This is a beautiful piece of human construction providing a serene feeling with monks dressed like in the ancient days walking about. The Kykkos monastery also has a museum where the ancient cristian relics and bibles (all in gold) are housed. It was a memorable visit. Before leaving Kykkos Monastery be sure to visit the wine cellars where the local vine (brewed by the monks, i suppose) is available for purchase, especially the 'Holy Wine'.
