Although Ayia Napa has become increasingly popular as an alternative Ibiza, Cyprus has many more cities across the island that caters for clubbers and partygoers in less of a commercialised manner. Paphos and Limassol are also tourist hotspots and are great towns for going out in although there is a lot more in Cyprus than usual holiday islands. The beaches and watersports are amazing around the island but not too far away from the coast are the mountains where monasteries, small villages that specialise in making lace, silver and terracotta giftware is abundant. The troodos mountains are the most popular and donkey travel is as widespread as people dricing up the mountains. Standing at the top of their Mount Olympus you can see the whole of the island, including the half under Turkish occupation. There is an omnipresent fusion of various cultures -Islamic, Greek, and Western European all over the island - in the food, the weatlh of historical sites, the architecture and the people themselves. The weather can get extremely hot and the mountains and smaller villages inland provide a welcome respite for those who've spent too much time lying on one of the beaches, which does provide a perfect balance for families and couples. One of the best things about Cyprus though is that the food and drink is cheap, plentiful and where I've had the best meals and friendly service in my life to date
