I went to Cyprus for the first time in 1998 with my fiance, just prior to our wedding. It was the last week in June and we got the holiday for a very reasonable price because it was the week of the world cup and the travel agents were trying to persuade people to leave their televisions behind and take a break.
We stayed in the Melini self cateringApartments which were really nice and we had a lovely balcony overlooking the sea. Most of the hotels in Protatas have sea views. There were lots of reasonably priced supermarkets near the hotel and a great variety of restaurants offering fixed price meals. I had heard that Cyprus was expensive but I found it very reasonable.
Having worked as a holiday rep in the past I prefer not to book my excursions through them as it's cheaper to find a local agent. There were plenty of travel agents on the main street and we managed to book trips to the Trodos Mountains, Nicosia and Paphos for approximately £9 each. A couple of these trips included buffet lunches. The only complaint I would have about the trips were the amount of churches they visited. When we went to Lefkara on the Trodos Mountains trips it was the only time in our visit to Cyprus that we experienced any hassle from shopkeepers. I was relieved to get back on the bus.
The local bus service from Protaras to Ayia Napa is pretty good, and cheap, if you want a change of scenery.
The best buys on the island seem to be leather goods and jewellery. We saved ourselves some money by buying our wedding rings in a local shop.
We're hoping to go back to Cyprus later on this year. I think we're going to give Paphos a try as we enjoyed our day trip there.

totally agree - Protaras and Cyprus were both wonderful. From my visit to Paphos, I found it to be generally much more expensive. Let us know how you get on

Advantages: an island with a vast history that indulges the best of the mediterannean in one area Disadvantages: The excessive heat in the summer months.
