I loved Cyprus from the moment we stepped off of the aeroplane. About 12 years ago my family decided they wanted a last minute break. We had always been to France and Spain for our holidays but my parents fancied something different. They had heard about Cyprus and were lucky enough to book cheap last minute holiday for us all. We booked on the Saturday and went on the Wednesday.
When we got there the apartments we were staying in (The Drakos) were lovely and clean and very spacious. The people went out of their way to help us with whatever we wanted. They speak very good English over there and drive on the left hand side of the road too. Great if you decide to hire a car.
Limassol is mainly on one very long main road. With Apartments extra mainly on one side and the beach on the other. Lots of crossings though so not a problem.
The beach is dark volcanic sand but just as nice as any other beach, with a beach bar and beachside restaurant with lovely food. The Greek salads we had there were out of this world.
Many places were extremely cheap to eat and do a wide variety of foods, From English to Greek and some Chinese restaurants too if you fancied that.
Alot of the restaurants also offer a Greek night. Which is usually a set price. Very reasonable.
Where we stayed was in the middle of Limassol. And to our left if we walked a little way were restaurants, bars then cocktail bars and nightclubs a plenty as you got further down the street.
The other way was the souvenier shops a few restaurants and The old town. Which is a must to visit. There are many winding old streets. In which it is easy to get lost if you are not careful. Hundreds of little shops to look in with the owners being ever so nice. Sometimes even offering you something to drink or eat while you looked round. And you really were under no obligation to buy if you took them up on their offer.
My dad bought a suit which was hand made to fit him. He went back a couple of times while we were there for measuring up and then collected the suit at the end of the two weeks. Whilst we waited for them to pack it for him they brought us lemonade. Sandwiches and sweets to eat.
There is a lovely castle you can visit and many others just outside Limassol.
You can go on daytrips to the Troudos mountains, Nicossia, Ayia Napa (lovely white sandy beaches and clear water. However, more for the club scene now), Paphos, Aphrodite's rock and many more places including ancient ruins. Such as the Tomb of the Kings. Brilliant if you like that sort of thing.
There are many cab companys offering set prices on these trips or you can simply hire a car at a reasonable rate and drive there yourself. None of them are very far from Limassol.
We have been five times in total. And I cannot wait until I have enough money to go back.
It is a little more expensive to go to than other Greek Islands, but there is more to see and do and it is cheaper once you get there.
