I was so excited when I booked my holiday to the Caribbean. The Dominican Republic one of the biggest islands in the Caribbean situated next to Cuba. The holiday was a last minute bargain – a two week all inclusive holiday for £650 with Airtours. I stayed at the Playa Dorada complex in Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic) at the Hoteteur Playa Dorada.
I had read so many reviews of this place – all of them saying great things about the hotel and area.
Well, what did I think? My complex was only 20 minutes from the airport and because it was a package holiday transfers were included. My first impression during the transfer was wow it’s so green. I usually take my holidays in the Mediterranean and you tend to find that most of the islands are volcanic and the landscape is brown, dry and barren. Which ever way you looked there were fields and trees, amongst these were living areas – I say living areas because the population is quiet poor, in some places you saw just a four walled box, however in the majority of cases families lived in worn down houses. Nothing like the standard we live in.
The hotel was in an enclosed large complex. With a shopping centre and
one or two independent bars, a bank, a golf course, a couple of independent restaurants. The scenery was beautiful, the hotels in the complex were all well presented and everything was much more modern than outside the complex gates. It is quit easy to forget that it’s different outside. Most of the tourists are British and Canadian and there is an increasing number of Germans apparently. The language spoken is Spanish.
The Hoteteur Playa Dorada was a large hotel. The room was simple but comfortable and very nice! There were two pools. I wasn’t very impressed with them. One had a bar and was very small and as shallow as the childrens training pool at my local leisure centre. The other pool was slightly deeper and larger with a maximum depth of 5ft. The large pool was used for playing games organised by the staff and there was usually a basketball flying around, so if you wanted to do a couple of lengths you had to squeeze them in an hour before the pool closed. I didn’t notice the state of the pools in the first week, with all the excitement. The pools seemed to be cleaned every morning, however by the second week I began to notice how dirty the pool was regardless of the cleaning. The water was not clear and you could see lots of white particles floating around.
The food! I thought all inclusive would be brilliant. The brochure said that there were two restaurants and a buffet in the brochure. What you get is one free visit and a limited selection at each of the restaurants. The buffet is ok for the first few days, I could cope with 7 days – you tend to find what ever is cooked smells the same and soon enough the smell makes you feel sick. I dreaded dinner by the second week. The breakfast was the best part! The lunch selection was the same everyday (for 14 days!) apart from a casserole dishes. But who wants to eat a large hot lunch when it’s scorching outside?! The dinner selection varied. Some days it was ok, others there was a struggle finding something that was nice. There was always pasta, but with the same sauces. By the end of the holiday I was dying to get back home just for a decent tasting meal!
The great thing about the hotel was that it was situated right on the beach. So within 5 minutes (across two small bridges surrounded by a lake and gardens) you were on the beach. The water was always lovely and warm and shallow. The deck chairs were free although if you wanted to sit in the shade you did have to get up early. The beach wasn’t overcrowded and you could walk along it for ages, from hotel complexes to completely deserted areas. If you wanted to do watersports you could find plenty to do. The only downfall about the beach was you got hassled a lot by locals trying to sell you things. I mean every five minutes!
We were told not to buy tours from the beach. You do have to be careful. I booked a quad bike tour on the beach after talking to people that had actually been on it from my complex. This was a great half day trip! You got absolutely plastered in mud. A local company gave you a quad bike and a helmet and you followed a guide through little villages on the roads and fields and to the beach. This was a terrific and fun way to see the real Dominican Republic. Don’t forget a bandana for your mouth if you go on one of these trips as the roads are very dusty! There was also an opportunity to do diving for first timers and your diving certificate in two full days and chances to snorkel. I went on an Airtours tour to the south of the island to La Romana, which is much more wealthier than Puerto Plata, and the island of Saona (The Caribbean coast. (Puerto Plata is on the Atlantic coast)). We flew in a light aircraft to La Romana and got to see across the country by plane, we went on a speed boat to the island of Saona, which is beautiful and much nicer than the beaches at the hotel. The sand is whiter and the sea is so blue and clear. The beaches were only waist height for ages and brilliant for snorkelling. This was a excellent trip and was one of the best parts of the holiday. Unfortunately it was very expensive £120. You will find that all the trips Airtours organizes in the Dominican Republic are expensive. You could easily find cheaper tours but it’s a matter of whether you can trust them or not!
Entertainment at the hotel. The hotel was supposed to be a simple low budget holiday and I’d say perfect for families with kids. It was what I’d call Butlins style! Families would love it because the staff entertain the kids all day, then entertain the adults late into the evening with cheesy shows! However, I must applaud the entertainment staff for the long hours they do from morning to late evening it must be hard work! The Cabarets and shows were not my thing! They were constantly organising team games which is good when you’re bored.
Finally the weather! I went in early October. It is supposed to be their hurricane season. During the day the weather was very hot and humid. Very different to the med. But nice. I came back very tanned! Unfortunately there were thunderstorms every evening, sometimes short, sometimes all night. Although it doesn’t ruin your holiday because it gets dark at 6.30pm and there’s no point leaving the hotel because there is nothing to do outside the complex and you have free drinks all night at the hotel so why go somewhere else? I went to bed early and woke up just as early to take advantage of the day.
I personally wouldn’t go to this hotel again. I wanted a relaxing, peaceful, romantic and a exploratory holiday. 14 days was too many! I think 10 days would have been more than adequate. The hotel had a lot of potential but the Butlins style approach, the cleanliness of the pool and the food spoiled it. I won’t be travelling with airtours again (I will write another review on this). The trips were great but after you’ve done a few of these there’s not much more to see and most of the trips are similar and expensive. I heard the white water rafting is great. I would have liked to do this but again the expense put me off! It is a sun and beach/pool holiday. Good for watersports. The country is beautiful and is definitely worth visiting. A lot of people who go there return time and time again. I enjoyed this holiday, it was a great experience, but I don’t think I’d revisit, I’d like to see the other Caribbean islands.

As this review is for the dominion republic in general and your review is based on the hotel you stayed in this really should be moved to http://travel.ciao.co.uk/Playa_Dorada_Dominican_Republic__5097109
