In October 2003, my best mate and I did something that to this day, I cannot believe we did, we went to Ghana for a week on our own, no kids or partners.
We have 10 children between us and had disgust many times that we thought we deserved a break, never really beleiving that we would go away for a week-end to the beach, let alone Ghana!
After a long shift at work one night, my mate went home and booked flights to Ghana for us both, texted me to say she had done this and would I honestly go, in my tired state I agreed.
It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.
My friend is married to a lovely man who has family in Sekondi Takoradi, so we only had flights to worry about, which alone cost £500.
The morning of our departure arrived and we bid a very tearful fairwell to our kids and husbands, caught the plane from Heathrow to Accra, stopping to refuel at Lagos.
We departed the plane at Accra, and were hit by a stifeling heat, which I had never experienced before.
My friends mum-in-law had arranged for us to be picked up and we spent the next 3 hours travelling to Takoradi, passing through 'villages' full of mud huts and children begging us to buy their goods.
The countryside was breathtaking, the way that the huts were built from little resorces was incredible, but most of all the generosity and hospitality we recieved from people who have nothing was astounding.
During our stay there, we had running water... sometimes, we had electricity... sometimes, we purchased fantastic wooden ornaments for 20p, we visited beautiful beaches, but most of all, for me any-way, My trip to Ghana made me rethink my life.
I would recommend a holiday here to any-one with a small sense of adventure, but not with small children.
There are so many beautiful places to see, we were lucky as we stayed with people who have grown up there and they took us to places that were dear to them.
Everything was so cheap to buy, apart from fizzy drinks, which we drank by the crate full.
There are loads of places to eat, but be sure to eat at restuarants, not from the carts on the side of the road.
The people of Ghana are very proud and generous people who don't see themselves as poor at all, in fact they are probably richer than us in many ways.
An absolute trip of a lifetime, I can't thank my friend enough for 'pushing' me into going with her.

The greatest adventure.
Review of General: Ghana by GregL

Advantages: The people and the culture
Disadvantages: The malarial tablets

A wealth of culture, history, breath taking scenerary, happiness and very few poisonous spiders! Ghana for me is equivalent to heaven on Earth. I briefly experienced ex patriot life and life of a few of the inhabitants of this beautiful country. When exploring Ghana the first thing that stunned me were the vareity of colours. The colours of the bush (rainforest), striking purple hummingbirds, greens and blues, flowers of all colours bright and huge ...
...the cities and villages. The bridge walk at Kakum National Park 2-3hrs drive north west of Accra. Is breath taking. Walking on no more than a plank with safety nets either side, you are propelled up to 40 metres above the rainforest floor. Friends had seen monkeys on the walkways that morning and walked with the butterflies later. Our guides name was 'Still Alive.' The people are Ghana's greatest resource. Always happy and smiling and so very polite, ... Read review

Axim Beach Resort
Review of General: Ghana by shh81

Advantages: Friendly Tropical Paradise
Disadvantages: Difficult to get to (but this could be an advantage!)

I went to Ghana for three months in 2003 and my favourite memory is of the Axim Beach Resort. I still think of it when I feel miserable in England to perk myself up! We took the STC (State Transport Coach) from the capital Accra to Takoradi, a smaller city in the west of the country; then from Takoradi we took a tro tro from the station to Axim. The tro tro ride was a real adventure, I had my head out the window like a dog the whole way! Tro tro's ...
...they are like the school sports bus you might take to an away fixture; at worst, they are like a big biscuit tin on wheels. When we got to Axim it was dark and there was only one taxi in the rank. We didn't really know where we were going, only to ask for the beach resort. Understandably we got ripped off, it was only a five minute walk away but in the dark, he took us on a round trip and tried to charge us 50,000 cedis (about £3). My advice to ... Read review

Kumasi - Ghana's second largest city
Review of General: Ghana by vinodgm

Advantages: Views, wildlife, tradition
Disadvantages: None

Kumasi is Ghana's second largest city and is situated in the Ashanti Region. It is about 5 hours drive from Accra. This region is rich in ancient history, culture and tradition. It is the heartland of all Asante and the ancient Asante Kingdom. Kumasi was founded in 1695 by the Asantehene Osei Tutu. Kumasi has various attractions such as palaces, museums, forts, churches, festivals and traditional articrafts. It also has the largest open air market ...
...artisan villages where traditional handcrafts, wood carvings and native woven cloths are sold. Among the attractions to visitors are the local funerals that usually take place on Saturday, where mourners wear the traditional red and black with drumming, dancing and drinking. A spectacular traditional even not to be missed. The Ashanti Region is a spectacular region with unspoiled virgin land and forest reserves where a variety of wild life is found ... Read review

A child's perspective- a life changing episode
Review of General: Ghana by borneo2007

Advantages: Incredible, memorable experience
Disadvantages: hot, mosquitoes, unreliable electricity and running water

For personal reasons my family decided to go to live in Ghana for afew months when i was seven, my sister five, and my little brothers both one. This may seem like a task in itself, but the experiences our stay there left us with are unforgettable. The people are so hospitable, their way of life so humbling, their attitude to life so refreshing. Of course, there are difficulties. It's baking hot for one thing; lovely in the day, but uncomfortable ...
...no air conditioning. There is rarely a time when the air conditioning and running water works at the same time, mosquitoes are a bother and it is necessary to use mosquito nets. However, despite all this the experiencewas incredible. Kakum rope bridges, Elmina castle, Cape coast, Ambosko Dam and the incredible beaches, pools and safaris are all must sees. For our family it was the holiday of a lifetime ... Read review

Axim Beach has poor customer service.
Review of General: Ghana by bouake

Advantages: beautiful view
Disadvantages: poor customer service and loss of valuable items

Although the beach is beautiful, the customer service we received was disappointing. Our AC did not work and although we said something daily, in the end we were blamed and told that we agreed to being there despite the AC. That was not true. Nothing was done about this accept that we were given a low season rate instead of a high season rate. My daughter's cell phone disappeared there as well as my husbands wallet. So please be careful about leaving ... Read review

The Golden Tulip
Review of Golden Tulip Hotel, Accra by  vinodgm

Advantages: Comfortable, Conveniently located, All necessary facilities
Disadvantages: Some may find it a bit expensive

...Many of you who might have read some of my previous opinions will be aware that I travel to West Africa quite frequently and one of the destinations that I visit most is Accra in Ghana. When travelling to Africa in general one of the most important decisions you must make is the hotel that you intend to stay in. You need a place that provides you with comfortable rooms, clean food and water, entertainment and security. My hotel of choice is the Golden Tulip Accra Hotel. This hotel is part of the Golden Tulip chain of hotels. Golden Tulip hotels enjoy a high reputation throughout the world. More on the Golden Tulip chain later in this opinion. The Golden Tulip Accra Hotel is located just 2 km from Accra’s Kotoka International Airport and is commonly referred to as the “airport hotel”. Most major... Read review
