I went to Ghana for three months in 2003 and my favourite memory is of the Axim Beach Resort. I still think of it when I feel miserable in England to perk myself up!
We took the STC (State Transport Coach) from the capital Accra to Takoradi, a smaller city in the west of the country; then from Takoradi we took a tro tro from the station to Axim. The tro tro ride was a real adventure, I had my head out the window like a dog the whole way! Tro tro's are cheaper public transport vehicles, like people carriers. At best they are like the school sportsbus you might take to an away fixture; at worst, they are like a big biscuit tin on wheels.
When we got to Axim it was dark and there was only one taxi in the rank. We didn't really know where we were going, only to ask for the beach resort. Understandably we got ripped off, it was only a five minute walk away but in the dark, he took us on a round trip and tried to charge us 50,000 cedis (about £3). My advice to you now is that it is 20,000 (about £1.20) and no more! I know it sounds really petty to feel cheated out of £1.80 but when you're in Ghana for three months on a budget, then you start to think more like a Ghanaian! However, when we got to the site it was like a dream come true. The resort was empty so the four of us got upgraded to the best hut at no extra cost. It was so beautiful, the bedding was lovely white cotton and the hut was made of stone, it looked out over a rocky bay. After beheading the mother of all cockroaches with a dustbin lid we went to the restaurant and bar area to get some late dinner.
The staff were so accommodating, despite it being so late. The food was delicious and a friend of the owner acted as our host. He was such a great man! We worked out from his stories that he must have been over seventy but I swear that he didn't look a day over fifty five! We were obviously in Neverland so we spent the whole night drinking wine. In the morning we went down to what seemed like our own private paradise beach plus showers and hammocks. We didn't want to leave. I would reccommend this place to anyone and would say that it might make a fantastic wedding venue with the accommodation prices so reasonable you could put your whole family up in the various huts. The Nzulezo stilt village is also a day trip away but you should give yourself extra time to enjoy this resort.
I hope you don't mind if I make a suggestion? There was a lot of information in your review but it was quite hard to read all bunched up together. Reviews that are broken up into smaller paragraphs and have a blank space between them are easier for others to read and it also gives a nice overall look to the review. Being hard to get to is usually an advantage in these places. This has, if it doesn't sound patronising to say so, the makings of a good review, but it needs more explanation and information: e.g. what a tro tro is, the value of the currency, where these intervening places are and how to reach them, local customs and things of interest, etc. Duncan
