Okay I have a theory. ALL JAPANESE PEOPLE ARE INSANE. I`m yet to be proven wrong. One advantage of this is though that they do create some of the most bizarre and wonderful things. So lets forget about the temples and castle these are the things you`ll really remember about Japan.

1.VENDING MACHINES
Not bizarre in themselves but they are actually every where, millions of them. Most sell just drinks and cigarettes, some sell alcohol(now be honest would that work in Britain, can you imagine how many drunken 12 year olds there would be lying about on the streets). They get slowly more unusual and bizarre, newspapers, pot plants, fast food. The most bizarre are the legendary vending machines that sell used school girls knickers, having not seen one I can`t guarentee that they still exist. Strangely though I haven`t found a single one though that sells chocolate or crisps!

2.ELECTRIC TOILET SEATS
These are clearly one of the greatest inventions of all time. Heated seats are pretty much essential when it`s cold. Most seats also have two squirting water functions for cleaning(you can change the force of the squirting) and a drying function. It makes going to the toilet a lot more fun and saves on toilet paper.
How these seats haven`t caught on back home I don`t know, in fact I might just have to start off my own toilet seat company when I get back.

3.LOVE HOTELS
Basically these were designed for couples who live in really small houses and so often want to get a few hours peace for well you know what, or maybe for Japanese business men and their secretaries. Make up your own mind, depends how supicious you are. You can either stay for just a couple of hours or the whole night but you can`t check in till late. The rooms tend to vary from pretty normal to completely insane theme rooms. The better one`s tend to have mini swimming pools and Jaccuzies(sorry about the spelling). The most bizarre/best one I`ve heard of is a Hello Kitty S&M room complete with a modified Kitty doll with a ball gag!!!

4.) KARAOKE
Another fantastic Japanese invention depending on how you look at it. I`m not talking about your usual English pub style karaoke though here thank God. There are still lots of small bars where business men go after work to sing Frank Sinatra to other drunk business men, but I guess these places are probably best avoided.
Instead go to one of the big karaoke places you see lots a long the street. Basically you hire out a small room just for your mates with a TV, a couple of microphones and sofa style seats around a big table. Most places have a huge selection of new and old foreign songs as well as often doing really cheap beer and food. The strange thing is its actually so much fun, you`ll always want to do more songs than you have time for. I guess it`s probably best with a group of slightly drunk friends but I know people who have gone completey sober in the middle of the day and hired a room for just 2 of them.

5. Food
First rule of Japanese cooking; if it`s alive and lives in the sea you can eat it. This means sometimes you`ll end up eating some really weird stuff like Octopus and sea urchin. Sometimes it`s nice, sometimes just pass the sick bucket. Raw fish is actually really nice depending on what kind of fish.
One of the more unusual delicalies is Fugu(blowfish) which contains large amounts of fatal poison that has to be removed before it can be eaten. All the chefs have to own a special license to be allowed to serve it. Anyone who has seen the simpsons episode about it will know what I mean.

6.) SUMO
What a fantastic sport, finally a chance for fats guys to become famous and professional sports stars. They even get all the pretty girls too. Nuff said.

7.)JAPANESE TV
As everyone knows Japanese tv is absolutely insane/rubbish. Lots of weird gameshows and talent competitions where the aim actually seems to be to sing as badly as humanly possible. The adverts are also pretty strange you`re quite often left just thinking `What the Hell was that about?` Although considing most people in the UK watch a show where a group of random people get locked in a house for a couple of months, Japanese TV doesn`t seem quite so strange after all.

8.)JAPANESE FASHION
Here I`m talking about when you down a street in a big city like Tokyo and suddenly you see someone(usually a girl) dressed in just a completely random costume i.e. like little bo peep, like Geri Haliwell(British flag dress, dyed hair, really high shoes), or completely over the top Goth style.
It`s so weird but they do it as if it`s the most natural thing ever and noone really stares at them either.

So I hope that's given you a rough idea of why Japan is completely mad the problem is if you stay long enough you'll probably start liking these things as well an noone will understand why

You should have mentioned the names of some of the drinks - did you ever try Pocari Sweat? Sounds disgusting, but it tasted pretty good!
