Having arrived in darkness after a 12 hour drive I was very grateful for the beach huts that were available. (I was in no mood to put up a tent!) Each hut was for 2 people, and cost about $10 US per night they were basic, but perfect for the surroundings and the mood of the place.
The morning brought the most amazing sights. The view from our hut was stunning. The sun rising over the huge beautiful lake, the waves crashing onto the soft sand, the birds hovering over the blue water incredible! The lake is huge, we were not able to see the opposite shore.
It was one of the most relaxing places I have ever been to. After weeks together on the truck we had a bit of a chance to do our own thing, although we did tend to stick together most of the time. By day we played beach volleyball, we swam, we read, we sunbathed. There are many other activities available here. You can windsurf, sail, or canoe all equipment can be hired at the campsite but the wind was too strong while we were there. (May)
The lake was totally safe to swim in, except at night when there was rumours of a crocodile! The water was very warm, I could have swum for hours. Its so easy to forget that it is a lake and not the sea, except when you get a mouthful of water!
It is a very peaceful place, we visited local villages, sat on our balconies just admiring the view or had a quiet drink in the bar. However, just outside the campsite, behind the locked gate many noisy local people would congregate, all wanting to sell us wood carvings, or jewellery, or wanting to do our washing or plait our hair. One guy even tried to sell us a huge dead snake! It was great fun just chatting to them all, or playing football or learning some weird local board game yes I did buy the game, and no, I have no idea how to play it!
Evening entertainment was pretty basic, but with a group of us there was no problem. The bar had good music, table football, and a dartboard. However, do not drink the gin and tonics (the gin comes in sachets beware) as they are akin to drinking fizzy nail varnish remover! And the beer is not much better!
It was a shame that we were only able to spend three days there. I imagine that the eclipse (on June 21st 2001) will be fantastic. I could have stayed there for months, just chilling out, and contemplating life!
GO! You wont regret it!

Nice op and nice to 'meet' someone who knows Kande. We just spent all of October there - helping the new dive shop owners (our friends) to build their house. It is indeed a very beautiful and relaxing place that will capture you completely. Just for information: the winds only blow about May-July, best time to visit is August through October... no wind, no rain just gorgeous sunshine, and excellent conditions for watersports as well as visiting other parts of Malawi.
