If you are visiting Malaysia there is one place you really must visit- The Central Market in Kuala Lumpur. Saved from demolition, the original art-deco style Central Market was converted into a fine "festive hall" and in 1986,reopened as Malaysia's foremost Cultural Shopping Centre showcasing the best local crafts and arts in the country.I always advise overseas visitors to make a trip since there is a lot to see and do, all under one roof.
Located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur where the city was founded, bargains can certainly be found at this famous landmark. Today the Central Market houses more than 130 shops-some are little more than kiosks-coster carts, more than 30 food outlets,a cineplex, an exhibition corner (Sudat Pameran in Malay)- and an outdoor riverside ampitheatre with free cultural performances.
On the ground floor you will find the Bull's Head,an English style pub, restaurants such as the Chinese Overseas Restaurant, and Hameed's Indian eatery, newsagents, fruit stores,Kelantan Silvercraft, shops selling costume jewellery, arts and crafts outlets, stores selling luggage, art dealers, shoe shops, and shoe shops. Most conveniently you will also find several money changers and several ATM machines.
On the Mezzanine floor are several more restaurants including Kampung Pandan which specialises in tasty Indian Muslim cuisine and Restoran Thai Cuisine ,which as the name implies, serves up fiery, Thai dishes. There is a food court with inexpensive local dishes such Chicken Rice, Claypot noodles, and Malaysian salad known as rojak. Also on this floor are hair saloons, ceramics shops, Indian antiques, stationery and card shops and there is even a fortune teller.
At the Annexe there are a host of fast food eateries such as Shakey's Pizza, Shawarma Kebab, and Be My Friend Cafe, banks, computer shops and Adamz cybercafe. You will also find the Odeon cineplex 1 and 2 here.Good batik paintings and prints are available at Dodos and art and T shirts at Eco Art.
It isn't just shopping that makes the Central Market a great place to visit. As I write this review there are a host of events being staged here. There is a Chinese New Year Exhibition which focuses on Chinese traditional costumes, handicrafts and antique furniture. There is even a mock Chinese wedding. On the 31 st January colourful Chinese Lion dances will be performed. Other recent events include Bhangra-Punjabi Harvest Dance, Malay dancing, Chinese dancing, and the Shaolin Goh Choir held a performance.
There is such a lot to buy,see and do at KL's Central Market which makes it a must see place
