I have visited Malta every year of my life mainly to visit family but also to enjoy the sunshine and hospitality. I have seen many changes over the last 10 years, prices are slowly creeping up and the island is becomming more and more untidy. I strongly recommend visitors stay in the south of the island where the tourist are just starting to venture. Pretty Bay (although very close to the freeport) offers great , affordable acomodation and a large beech with park for the children. The Seebreeze hotel offers a range of acomodation with self catering apartments for less than £40.00 per person per week(summer time). A short drive from Pretty bay is the Delamara, a local swimming area not yet discovered by tourists. This is a fantastic place to swim however not suitable for very young children. The delamara is not sign posted so you will have to ask for directions. If you are feeling more adventurous ( and brave enough to take to the roads together with the Maltese drivers) I also recommend Har Lapsi. Again fantastic swimming area but not suitable for young children.Places to avoid: Unless you have children under 8 years old dont bother with the popeye village. It will cost you £M3.00 per person (approx £5.00) and the entertainment is really quite poor, not great value for money. Another area to avoid is the Blue Grotto, unless you are really interested in the coral this boat trip is a bit of a let down as once you enter the caves its too dark to see anything. The captain morgan trips are great however do not take the option which includes food, you will receive a cold , taste less and not very appetising buffet (take a packed lunch).
