To say I am qualified to review Malta is somewhat of an understatement...Im Maltese and lived there for a long time!

To see detailed aspects of Malta see my other reviews in the Malta section (to be added very soon!)

I will give both good and bad points:

In general Malta is a place you will love or hate...simple as that.

It resembles other Med countries and Islands in terms of buildings, that they are mostly made of limestone. If you are into history and artitecture Malta is an absolute must. It has over 2000 years of history and will simply astound you.

If your 20 something looking for a beer holiday forget it, this place is not for you...

Malta is full of charm and is one of the most romantic places you can go. It does not take long to get there and Luqa airport is a breeze to pass through...your baggage arrives in less than 15 minutes. In another 5 minutes your out in the sunshine which averages about 300 days per year.

Malta is littered with fireworks and festivals. Some refer to it as all bells and smells! they are the people who do not like Malta.

Presently it is undergoing a HUGE expansion of new housing so mostly in the built up areas there is alot of work going on. However, a 10 minute drive is all thats needed to get you into the open countryside with simply outstanding and breathtaking views. Go deeper into the country side and you can visit 4000+ year old buildings from many many different civilisations (particularly in Xemxija (pronounced: shem shia) near Mellieha (pronounced: meh lee a)

Rabat houses the great silent city...Mdina (pronounced: mmm deena)
This is where the royalty and kinghts of Malta lived. To this very day only pure decendents of royalty and knights of Malta are allowed to live and when you walk through the vast little walkways time literally stops dead. You are in a different world.

Nightlife is good for lovers, couples and most people. The island is littered with excellent restaurants...it really is best to go where the locals go to eat...tourist places are full of cheap rubbish food and expensive. Go where the Maltese go and your guaranteed a true blend of Maltese food at very cheap prices, just dont expect 5* service.

Fenek (Rabbit) and Timpana is Maltese tradition. Fenek is cooked superbly and is renowned europe over as Malta being the best. Really, dont knock it...try it and you will want more...its simply delicious. Timpana is a pasta dish with bolognese sauce, eggs, cheese and pastry top...again simply delicious...and its extremelly filling. Alternatively if you want a snack get the infamous "passtizzi" or cheese cake. Its made with the best riccotta cheese in a delicious pastry. 2 is enough unless your a big eater then 3 will suffice...and they are small enough to fit inyour hand. At around 10-12cents each you really cannot go wrong. The best place to get these is in Rabat, ask anyone in Rabat and they will know exactly what and where you mean...they will probably even walk you to the door!!!

Whilst your eating passtizzi check out the Roman Villa no more than 20 yards from where you bought the passtizzi's. Its full of history.

To get around bus is by far the cheapest. There are no returns and costs at the VERY MOST 50cents...this is to travel to the other side of the island. It does take time though but heck your on holiday! Otherwise car hire is around 10 Lira but beware...Maltese drivers have NO regard for driving laws and they will not stop for love nor money. It really is a case of dont watch your driving...watch others! Probably best to take the bus! They do not look when coming out of junctions, roundabouts or look anywhere for that matter they just keep on driving...make sure you have very very adequate cover!!!! Im serious.... Buses are very very very frequent because they are all self employed!

There are many places to shop but dont expect much to be open between 1-4pm as they take a siesta. The busy tourist/city areas like Sliema & Valletta shops do stay open.

The island is a mere tiny little place of about 10km by 20km dotted dead centre of the Med sea!

Exchange rate is approximately £1 sterling to 62 Maltese cents (100cents to 1 Maltese Lira) Though they are now in the EU the Euro is accepted

PS you HAVE TO GO TO GOZO WHILE YOUR THERE....you will kick yourself if you dont. Ferry's frequently leave every 30 mins and takes around 15-20mins to get there. The tickets for the ferry are return and costs around 10lira for a car and 3-4 people. If not taking the car its just over 2lira per person.
