The first thing you notice when you arrive in Melbourne is when you're flying over it in a plane all the streets are like in New York - all criss-cross, so it's easy to find your way around.
So after collecting your bags, you jump in to a taxi and go to your hotel. May I reccommend you stay at the Rockman's Regency - it's 'One of the best Hotels in the World.' The food is fantastic, but you can also rent a flat for a week in the building on a self-cooking basis. I must point out that the flats are very nice, and that supermarkets are available near to the apartments.
People are very welcoming and charming, and you'll find a lot to do. Perhaps you want to go and see the set of Neighbours, a street which does exist and is lived in. Or maybe a boat trip takes your fancy. Or maybe, you want to do what I did - take a train trip to the Koala sanctuary - it's well worth it. I was very ill on the day I went, but I'd promised my children I would go. It was amazing. You could touch the animals, and they game you regular speeches about the animals and the feeding.
And if you want to get across town, then why not hop in to a tram? Let it take you to the beautiful Botanical Gardens! The gardens in Melbourne have been dubbed the most beautiful gardens in the world. So why not pay them a visit?
Another must-see is the Imax cinema (see my opinion on Sydney's), and, although we have one here in London, I found it a bit of a disappointment compared to Melbourne.
Unfortunately, Melbourne is a little pricey, but that's OK because it's worth it.
And, finally, just an experience I had... I was sitting hapilly one night in my hotel room, preparing to venture in to the wild nightlife. The gentle sun rays were softly leaning in to my room, creating a pleasant warmth. Within a space of five minutes, the sun had disappeared and halestones the size of golf balls were hammering desperately against my window. So that's why they call Melbourne the 'four seasons an hour' city.

we Austrians are lucky as we have the new B777 from Lauda Air who take just 20 hours down there, the Melbourne zoo I´ve seen twice and I love best the wombats and the little hippos

Advantages: cosmopolitan; great dining, arts and sports scene; prettiest city in Oz Disadvantages: not very many at all - perhaps some unsafe areas at night, but only if you're alone
