If you are planning a trip to Australia then Melbourne is an absolute must to add to your itinerary. It is such a beautiful city and contains everything you could possibly want. As part of a working holiday, I spent 3 months living in Melbourne and these are the main attractions as well as some helpful hints. Anything goes in Melbourne, so be prepared, you will see some very unusual sights!! You may also spot the odd famous person...I saw Kimberley Davies (Annalise from neighbours) walking down Brunswick Street. I have read the other reviews on Melbourne and they cover the most famous attractions so I wanted to add a few more that most people may not know about.

Crown Casino: A great night out even if just to watch. I went 3 times while I was in Melbourne and loved it every visit – even though I didn’t always win money. It is just so big and flashy and there is so much to choose to see. Not only is there gambling (roulette, black jack, pokies etc) but there is a 24 hour disco, restaurants, pubs, shops and a cinema. There are rooms available but they are extortionate. I heard the cheapest room was around £250 a night. Just be careful though…it is totally addictive and you can lose your money in a flash. I was always at the cheapest tables where you could bet from 80p a go but some people were throwing on chips at $100 a go (around £40). You don’t need to dress up either and if you run out of money, there are large TV screens showing different sports form around the world

North Fitzroy: This is the suburb our hostel was in. It is about 10 minutes on the tram from the city centre. We stayed in Brunswick St.which was full of pubs, restaurants and shops. We tried most of the pubs and restaurants and they were all really nice. The top end of the street was a council housing estate which housed some ‘interesting’ people and I wouldn’t recommend hanging about there at night but in the busy part of the street, I could happily wander about the shops at night without any hassle. In fact, the people were so friendly and were genuinely interested in meeting travelers. Also, it was an excellent street for getting work as most of the restaurants would give you a trial without a formal interview. On more that one occasion, I just walked in and they asked me to start that night. There is also a reasonably priced internet café. The hostel we stayed in was The Royal Derby Hotel and only cost $200 (about £80) a week for both of us to stay in a double room and that included breakfast every morning and a free drink every day. We ended up staying there for the full 3 months. We did look into a flat share, but the only ones we could afford meant sharing wih some very strange and unusual people. Now, the hostel was really budget accommodation, but it was warm, comfortable and very friendly. Plus, a lot of Australians passed through there, so it was a great way to meet the locals and find out all the non-touristy information. Also, it had a bar downstairs that had regular events such as comedy nights, live bands and video nights and provided cheap food for backpackers. Although, since I stayed there, it has changed hands so I think it is now a bit more respectable. But I had some fantastic times staying there.

Smith St: This was the street adjacent to Brunswick St. and basically a place where you could get pretty much anything you want. There are shops selling discounted designer clothes, arts and crafts, Chinese wholesale foods, a supermarket (Safeway-would you believe), photo developing shop (which was excellent quality), pubs and many other outlets. Also, apparently, if you were willing to hang around the street corners at night, you could get a whole lot more. Although, I don’t think I would hand around too long at night – one night I went late night shopping and there were a lot of freaky people about!!

Rose St Hotel: Again, not far from our hostel and offered very cheap, mostly good quality food. For example you could get a full roast dinner for about £3 – although don’t try the pasta – its rotten.

The Tankerville – In Johnstone St (I think). This is a pretty cheap 24 hour pub which offers food and a large screen tv.

The Rialto Towers – This building has an observation desk which you can get in to for about £4 and from there you can see the whole of Melbourne. Well worth a visit.

Great Ocean Road - This is basically as it sounds - a very long road running alongside the Ocean!! But it is breathtaking. On the way, you pass through small towns such as Apollo Bay and Lorne which are well worth a stop. Also, you pass through a National Park, where you can talk long walks - although I would advise you to wear long trousers as some parts are quite dense and you don't know what beasties could try to have a gnaw at your leg!! There are also other attractions such as the Thunder Cave where when the tide is high you can hear what sounds like thunder (suprisingly)!! and the 12 Apostles which is where the land has broken away from the sea to produce 12 monument like structures in the ocean. It really is spectacular...especially on a sunny day. But be warned... the petrol stations close very early so don't do what I did and run out of petrol at 10pm at night in the middle of nowwhere and have to get a kind samaritan to help you out.

Other information – We arrived in August and it was freezing so make sure you have warm clothes. By about October/ November it started to get really warm. Also, it get dark pretty early even in summer. Some days it was dark by 7pm.

There are regular trams all over the city and you can get pretty much anywhere you want to go in Melbourne on no more that 2 trams and they cost about 60p a journey. But they do stop every 20 feet so even the shortest journey can take a while. They have some strange rules for driving in Melbourne. The best way is to go slow and watch and learn. There are plenty of taxis in Melbourne but you should always agree a price before your journey or they will rip you off.

If you want to work, you need to get a Tax File Number, which you can get from the Tax Office in the centre of town. It is often worthwhile so sign up with agencies for work but you have to chase them up and have to be willing to work the odd shift here and there. I was very lucky and got 3 months work doing data entry for £6 an hour. The Hotel Bakpak in the Centre has a Backpackers Resource Centre which offers a lot of useful information and also can help you get work - although it can be cheap labour at times. Beware of sales jobs as these tend to be commission only. Also, you should get a mobile phone because if you are phoning for jobs you will really need a contact number. We manged to get one for about £20. The wages are slightly more than back home but the cost of living is less so you are definetely better off.

Whilst in Australia, you are covered for medical care and some presciptions. As soon as you arrive in Oz, go to a Medicare Centre and apply for a Medicare Card and then if the event of any treatment required, you can show your card and you will not be billed. Also, note that if you are given a presciption in the hospital, it is much cheaper to get the medicine in the hosptial as it is subsided whereas the chemist will charge you almost twice as much. If you are moving around a lot, you can get mail sent to your local post office for free and they will hold it for up to 3 months.

Most of the food is generally cheaper than it is in Britain. We found that in most places you could get a main meal and a drink for around £4 a head.

The city centre is excellent for shopping although you will find that there are a lot of beggars and at times you can get stopped two or three times in one street, so be prepared. I even had one guy telling me he had been locked out of his house and asked if I could give him $20 for a taxi to his friends house. I said no and then another woman ran up to me and said don’t give him any money, he is a drug addict and then she asked me for money!!

But, I have to say I really enjoyed my time in Melbourne and met a lot of great people some of whom I still keep in touch with.
