Down Mexico Way

Advantages: Wonderful ancient ruins to explore
Disadvantages: food was often fairly poor

A few years ago I went on a cultural tour of Mexico, visiting Mexico City, Merida, Chichen Itza, Uxmal, Oaxaca, Palenque and Monte Alban.

Getting There

The journey to Mexico from London Heathrow was easy and uneventful (apart from being upgraded to first class then being forced to use the Concorde Lounge. The First Class Lounge was being renovated) A direct BA flight taking just over 11 hours.

Mexico City
...from the first night's accommodation at the Best Western Majestic Hotel. This was a lucky choice as it must be one of the best in Mexico City, on the west side of Zocalo, the main square, with a 7th floor roof-terrace and restaurant overlooking the enormous plaza de la Constrictucion, Catedral Metroplitana and Palacio National. An absolutely fantastic location, and the roof terrace makes a great place for breakfast or a drink to end an exhausting ... more

Seven Days in Heaven

Advantages: Quite close to Paradise
Disadvantages: You could be unlucky enough to experience a hurricane

Rather unwillingly I have just returned from Mexico, where I had one of the best holidays I've ever had. Feeling the effect of Post Holiday Blues, I thought I'd re-live my holiday by writing about it. Two of my friends and I booked to go to Mexico only 3 weeks prior to our departure date. We got a fantastic deal through Thomson's and paid £450 per person for 7 nights in a 5 star all-inclusive resort in Riviera Maya. We flew from Manchester to Cancun ...
...fan of flying, but if I feel it's going to be worth it I can just about put myself through the torture. The flight was just under 10 hours (in Mexico they are 6 hours behind Greenwich meantime). By the time we arrived in Cancun I was a little exhausted and in all honesty I was rather unimpressed with Cancun. The only way I can really describe Cancun is by saying it's very "American". Think huge hotels, big McDonalds and other gigantic fast food outlets ...

Magical Mystical Mexico

Advantages: Nice weather, beautiful scenery, Just Brilliant
Disadvantages: Long haul flight required, fairly expensive (but worth it!)

We wanted to go somewhere special for our honeymoon. Mexico certainly lived up to that ideal and much, much more besides. What a fantastic holiday, and what a wonderful place to visit. My husband and I got married on 19th August 2000 but had to wait until the 25th before we could go on our honeymoon. We went with Thompson Holidays and the main drawback was the Friday departure. We were informed that Mexico is a popular location for honeymooners and ...
...strange that flights are all on Fridays, considering the most popular day for a wedding is a Saturday! But hey, all that aside, at least it gave us a chance to recover from our fantastic wedding day and sort out packing etc. The outward flight was at a fairly sensible time in the morning and seeing as we live slightly more than an hour from Gatwick, this was not a problem. If you live too much further you may prefer to book into a hotel near the ...

Mexico a go go

Advantages: Fantastic Scenery, Friendly People, Great Food, Cheap Drink
Disadvantages: Big and Hot

As you may be aware I've spent the last couple of weeks on holiday in Mexico, or that's what I thought. This opinion is not about my stay in Mexico but rather some points to note if you are thinking of Mexico as your destination for your holiday. The holiday itself has given me a lot of material that will probably be spread over several opinions as I've seen headings for the various bits under the Ciao travel umbrella. So here goes, in no particular ...
...the place. I'll probably add things as they come to me later , but hopefully this will be of some help to you out there: ~~Distance From Britain, Mexico is a ten hour flight , so if possible get the seats with the most room possible. After half an hour you will really appreciate the extra room. My holiday cost around 1500 GBP and 150 GBP was a supplement for the premium class option. I travelled with Air 2000. We also had a five hour coach journey ...

A different taste of Mexico

Advantages: cheap, good climate, friendly people
Disadvantages: expect to pay tips in most places

I have always been very interested in ancient culture and history, so when I had the chance to go to Mexico one of my long life dreams came true. Choosing the best alternative wasn’t an easy task but I finally decided upon an organized tour of 9 days that would cover 1500 km and cross 2 Mexican States: Peninsula del Yucatan and Chiapas. Before you travel there are a few tips to bear in mind: 1.Mexico is a large country so don’t think ...
...to very hot. 2.Wear comfortable clothes and shoes (if you’re going to visit the ruins and jungle it is advisable not to wear open style shoes; there are scorpions, snakes, etc that could bite you). 3.High protection suntan and mosquito repellent is strongly advisable. 4.Only drink bottled water. Don’t know if you have heard about Montezuma’s Revenge story, a tale about people who visited Mexico and ended up with upset stomach. ...

You have to go there

Advantages: caribbean sea, sunshine, white sand, tequila, dancing, snorkelling...
Disadvantages: you have to leave...

Mexico is the best country I have visited as it has it all. Firstly, it is absolutely stunning. The scenery is magnificent, ranging from barren deserts to the caribbean coast to lush forests and waterfalls. Added to this, the ruins to be found throughout the country are spectactular - I was sceptical, not being much of a keen sightseer, but they are well worth the effort! If you get sick of sightseeing, the towns and beaches provide plenty of entertainment. ...
...and vibrant that it has something to please everyone - from beautiful old buildings and parks to lairy bars and Las Vegas-style hotels. The Yucatan peninsula is a must as it contains much of the most spectacular scenery and ruins, as well as the Caribbean coast. The beaches are so beautiful that it is worth visiting Mexico for these alone! And it doesn't end there - at night there is plenty to keep you occupied - good restaurants, bars and clubs ...

Los Alamos

Advantages: sunshine, scenery, 'big skies', SPACE SPACE SPACE
Disadvantages: the need to be able to drive

I was lucky enough to be based in Los Alamos, New Mexico for a couple of years and so far, they were the best years of my life. During my time in the US I was able to travel reasonably widely and although each state has its own charms there is something about New Mexico that, as the license plates say, make it the 'Land of Enchantment'. Los Alamos itself is a small town, akin to many smallish University towns in the UK with a very unique history. For those that aren't aware it was where the nuclear bomb was developed that 'won the war'. It is still home to a thriving scientific community, most of the people that live in the town are employed at the scientific laboratory or in the service industries that support the lab. It is situated halfway up a volcano spread over several mesas. The town itself has a good feel to it although I ...

First the old, now...New Mexico

Advantages: Great towns, fabulous scenery.
Disadvantages: A bit awkward to get to.

We were 100 yards and a zillion light years away from Interstate 40. Over there, the cars and heavy trucks roar past at 75 mph and the year is 1999. Here, you can get some real kicks on dusty old Route 66, where time has stood still for 40 years and more. The Mother Road, as Route 66 is also known, represented the very epitome of post-war freedom and the age of the fast car and once ran uninterrupted from Chicago to Los Angeles. It has now largely been replaced by modern interstates, but here, on this 25-mile stretch in New Mexico, you can almost hear the snakes rattle as the wind blows the tumbleweeds across carriageway. Crumbling trading posts and gas stations line the roadside; motels that set the trend for a nation always on the move still sport those wonderful neon signs that are the essence of 20th-century Americana ...

Alamogordo

Advantages: Sunshine and Lots to Do
Disadvantages: Watch Out for the Rattlesnakes!

Being married to an ex U.S Serviceman, I was lucky enough to be stationed at Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo, New Mexico for 6 years. With 350+ days of sunshine and an annual rainfall of just over 11 inches, what more could I ask for? Whether you want the heat of the sparkling desert or the cool air of the mountains, Alamogordo is the perfect place. I thoroughly enjoyed riding the dunes on sleds at 'White Sands', and hiking/camping out in the mountains of 'Cloudcroft.' Holloman Air Force base is the home of the much talked about F-117A Stealth Fighter, so as you can imagine, it was very interesting trying to catch a glimpse of one. Ok, so New Mexico may not have the beaches of California, but if you want a taste of the 'Wild West', give Alamogordo a try. ...
