I am surprised that no one has written about the beautiful island of Montserrat and how it was before the terrible volcano.
Montserrat is a small island in the west indies, (roughly 4 miles round) very close to Antigua and Barbuda which you can see from Montserrat on a clear day (which is usually)!
The Island has much greenery and is named the Emerald Isle. This stems from when the island had Irish inhabitants during the times of the Slave Trade. There are still Irish influences on the island, especially when you notice the Montserratians surnames.
There is also a strong English influence on the island, place names such as Plymouth (it's capital) and the sight of Red phone and letter boxes.
Much of the island is greenery, and the roads are dirt tracks; there are no traffic lights on the island.
There are no pubs, there is one club called the Palm Tree, and one supermarket called Lams.
Montserrat is in many ways untouched by western traits. There is much poverty, but it is never felt. Fruits grow freely on the trees to eat and there are water springs to drink from. If you are hot you can knock on anyones door to ask for ice water, and you'll get it. There are makeshift bars along nearly every road, and drinks are dirt cheap! There are no Macdonalds or takeaways, and when i last visited, there was one newly opened pizza parlour!
You can find better food by travelling to Runway Ghaut, where a woman runs a Roti takeout service from her kitchen, the best you'll ever taste.
Local cuisine includes Iguana and 'Mountian Chicken' which is in fact large Frogs that live in the North, hillier part of the island.
There is a place in Montserrat with a drinking spring called Runway Ghaut. It is said that if you drink from this spring you shall return to Montserrat again, and i sincerely hope i do!
Montserrat also has the most beautiful waterfall, which should not be missed. All except one of montserrats beaches are black sands, this is from the last volcanic eruption many years ago, and the one sandy beach can be found in an area called Carrs Bay. This also happens to be where the wealthier residents live!
Montserrat was a most beautiful island, it still is in many parts. I hope the volcano there setlles down, and Montserrat can once more be enjoyed as it should be.

I guess no ones written about Monserrat before because not many of us can afford to go there. I remember the storm damage from a few years ago - AND it used to be a trendy place for an artist to go and record an album - but your article has given me more insight into the island as a whole. Cheers
