Are You a Cat Person?

Advantages: Not many tourists, easy to get around without being on a tour
Disadvantages: Wildlife is less abundant than in some parts of Africa

Namibia is one of the few countries in Africa that can claim that the animals are more dangerous than the people. In all of Africa it is probably true to say that the mosquito is the most dangerous animal, but in Namibia it is the hippopotamus that comes in second instead of man. Namibia has a very small population of fewer than 2 million people. It now however also has a small high quality tourist industry. The wildlife is less abundant than many ...
...but the lack of bus-loads of tourists on a day trip away from the beach makes it far more pleasant and the wildlife viewing more satisfying . The varied landscape of the country, from the huge sand dunes (allegedly the biggest in the world?) to the Kalahari dessert and game viewing in Etosha National Park make it a wonderful holiday destination for lovers of the natural world.

When I went to Namibia I did a ten day self-drive holiday ... more

Overview and opinion

Advantages: Space is too small!
Disadvantages: Far away! That's pretty much it!

I've already written pieces for some of the individual places, so I'll try not to go over old ground etc etc, but here's the basics. During my GAP year in 1997, myself and two friends from school backpacked and hitchiked from Kenya through all the countries in between to SAfrica over a period of three months. Transport methods varied wildly, but generally we got from A to B, although sometimes with a whole lot of other letters strung in between as ...
...nothing about until we arrived and I read parts of the Lonely Planet, but this all changed, this country most people have never heard of, and has a population of around 1.6 million, despite being 4 times the size of the UK (UK pop around 60 million). It's very unlike all the other parts of Southern Africa. In places like Swokupmund and Luderitz for example you've got very typical German architecture, and the streets are called things like 'Kaiser ...

Enchanted Desert

Advantages: Stark Beauty, Landscape, Wildlife, Variety
Disadvantages: Long Distances

I visited this driest of dry countries a few years ago and fell in love with the place. I travelled from the most northern Caprivi Strip down to the South African Border. A very low population density gives you huge skies and open places, silence and isolation and the small disadvantage of long travelling distances. Experience the Big Five in the Etosha National Park, Desert Elephants & Rhino in Northern Namibia and see Ostriches running through ...
...up on German pastries and drive to Sossusvlei to climb the dunes and ski down them. Enjoy sensory overload (smell, sight and noise) as you see thousands of seals at the Cape Cross seal colony. Spend nights under the stars in countless environments and head for the, albeit limited, nightlife & shopping of Windhoek. A contrast and variety that is amazing and hard to believe! ...
