There's more to life than just Amsterdam

Advantages: Cheap to get to, friendly people, lovely historic old towns
Disadvantages: A local pathological obsession with bread

'''INTRODUCTION'''

It was 14 years ago that I boarded a plane to Amsterdam for a weekend trip which would be the first time I'd been on a plane since I was 3. Having recently landed a job where I was asked if I minded international travel, I thought I'd better take a crash course in foreign travel, and accompanied by my sister here I was on my way. Having been half scared to death by the noise and momentum of the jet engines on take ...
...foreign language once I'd arrived, it was a crash course indeed. And I hadn't even been to the red light district yet. Fast forward to the present day, and about half my working life has been spent abroad in one way or another, so they weren't joking about the travel. And here I find myself again in the Netherlands, but this time way off the beaten track, to the South in a small town called Breda. These days I find myself idly amused by plane take ... more

There's so much more than just Amsterdam

Advantages: Helpful people, English widely spoken, Veggie friendly
Disadvantages: motorway congestion at rush hour

The Netherlands I’ll say up front, I’m a fan. I really like the Netherlands, enjoy visiting there and generally think it’s a pretty cool place. It’s not always been the case, the first time I visited it thought it was no better than okay. Amsterdam. It must be said the first time I ventured to the Netherlands it was only on a day trip to Amsterdam. I didn’t have enough time there to formulate a proper opinion; well you wouldn’t when you are clocking ...
...would you? The main thing I learned from that trip is that Amsterdam is not really a ‘morning place’; I didn’t really come to life until after lunchtime. At the time the Easyjet flights from my nearest international airport (Liverpool) made Amsterdam a much cheaper option to visit than London – what a strange world we live in. Easyjet still operate from Liverpool to Amsterdam and arriving at Schipol airport its hard not to be impressed with the ...

A Culinary Guide To Holland

Advantages: best chips in the world, great mussles
Disadvantages: no national cuisine whatsoever

The Netherlands are not really famous for good food (rightly so), but I have lived and dined there for several years, and survived. Lacking a typical Dutch cuisine, Holland is full of international restaurants. But it does have some things going for it: Dutch chips are legendary, and in some parts of the country you can even find gourmet restaurants. Here comes my culinary guide to Holland. ---------------------------- AMSTEL, HEINEKEN & CO. ---------------------------- ...
...Dutch essential follows at the end of this article). Holland has come up with some very famous and not so famous beers and is home to a spirit which most British think was their invention. BEER: Heineken and Amstel are often perceived as competitors, but Amstel is actually a brand of Heineken Corp., as is Murphy's Irish Stout. Although Heineken and Amstel are among the world's most famous lagers and available in any tourist destination on the globe, ...

Netherlands

Advantages: Interesting towns, great nature reserves and many attractions
Disadvantages: Very quiet off season

The Netherlands are the lowest of the low.....Low Countries that is, and the Delta region is the lowest area of them all. This review is about three towns we visited when we were there earlier this year: VEERE, MIDDLEBURG and SLUIS. * VEERE - a Scottish enclave * As the town has historical links with Scotland and is in fact twinned with CULROSS in Fife, we just had to pay it a This review is being updated. Pros: Small, friendly people, a lot of nature. Cons: Crowded in the summer, the weather. The Bottom Line: Visit Holland soon and love it too! Recommended: Yes I already wrote about my town, Maastricht, now i write about my country; the Netherlands. Capital: -------- The capital is Amsterdam. In this town live about 700.000 people. Its a very historical place and has more to offer then drugs and the redlight-district. The most important musea and ...
...streetmarket that is opened 365 days a year and you can buy there everything xou can imaging or not imagine. Den Haag: --------- This is our second "capital". Here you find our queen Beatrix and all government buildings. Daily politics are made here. It is almost completely build in the 1920s and has a lovely architecture. Hilversum: ---------- Some special place. It is the Hollywood of the Netherlands. Here is the world where TV and Radio is made. ...

A country to fall in love with

Advantages: Not far from England, English widely spoken, good public transport, friendly.
Disadvantages: Unpredictable climate

I've been travelling to Holland for holidays for 15 years. I love the country. It's friendly, good value for money, there's plenty to do, and the different cities have their own distinct character. The capital is, of course, Amsterdam. Plenty to do here apart from sex and drugs. There are decent restaurants (try some away from the main tourist areas. Good international, cheap eating in De Pijp area). Bars are, of course, lively. There are pretty ...
...some great markets Noordermarkt/Westermarkt (monday) Albert Cuypstraat (daily) Waterlooplein(daily). Trams are easy to use - buy a Strippenkaart to get around. Don't forget the Anne Frank Huis (arrive early to avoid queues). The Red Light area is safe, but watch your bags, and do NOT take photographs - the ladies object very strongly. I have reviewed Rotterdam separately. Also worth visiting: Den Haag (seat of government) , Delft (pretty, visit ...

More Belgian beery delights on Breda's main square

Advantages: Decent food, drinks and location
Disadvantages: A bit dark inside

servings quite small compared to UK standards but personally I prefer this and in fact struggle these days with large ones having got used to the Dutch size. SERVICE This is almost always good (I can think of one exception with a barely interested poker faced waitress). It's particularly nice in the summer sitting outside. Only if they're very busy hard is it to get their attention. In the winter inside, it's usually no problem as they're always running around serving, and in the Netherlands it's generally very much up to you to hail them. In my experience only top notch restaurants will give you even a semblance of attention. I guess this is a cultural thing. I am being kind today. FUN WITH BABEL FISH sea visibility is himself to the large market in breda and has 2 deepenings. You come in in the sociable café where ...

DAM fine n dirty

Advantages: Liberal, unique & friendly capital city, easy & cheap to get to.
Disadvantages: A bit grimy & sex shops are v.tacky, not for kids

taking a car. In the Dam! Amsterdam on first impressions, is a very busy & unique city & the 3 times I've been there, its always been cloudy! The people are quite friendly and the transport around the city is good, with the trams frequent & quite cheap. Taxis are not too expensive either. For most Brits, a good thing about Amsterdam & Holland in general is that many Dutch people have a good command of English. Food is akin to many capitals, with many McDonalds kicking about. A lot of steak restaurants & chineses are also present. Accomadation My main gripe with Amsterdam, there never seems to be enough hotels about and the cheaper ones for travellers are terrible (no formule 1's here!) Some make you stay 2-3 nights and charge the earth. I wouldn't recommend hostels at all, nasty communal places and you don't know who ...

A carnivore feast from the Pampas

Advantages: Good food, good service
Disadvantages: Good but not outstanding

environment, translated in a contemporary setting. The gauchos restaurants have established without exception on A1-locaties (near important uitgaans - or shopping centres) and sometimes also in monumental pawn. The restaurants are as a result, for a general public well contactable. Given the success of this formula space for further franchising is both existing and new locations in the Netherlands. The gauchos restaurant manage group in wide 20 restaurants in respectively the Netherlands and United Kingdom. CONCLUSION For a chain restaurant, I was very impressed by the quality of the food. The service was also good and the décor very appealing. The fact than the menu is in excellent English does no harm either. I have been here a couple of times before, but that was last summer, and I dined outside. I do remember being equally ...
