I have recently travelled to Oman, and oh my, what a country! I travelled with Emirates flying from Manchester to Muscat with a connection in Dubai, for approximately £470 through Dial-A-Flight. You will only need between £300 to £600 spending money for a large group of people as food is generally cheap, as is camping equipment.
In order to really see Oman, you need to visit it via a camping holiday, otherwise you wont see the true beauty of it. You will need to do a bit of research on it however, and will definately need to purchase in detail maps of the country, as many parts of it have un-tarmacked roads, and without a detailed map, they wont show up.
I rented a Nissan Patrol from Hertz Rent-a Car for about £240 for the 10 days I went for. I then purchased camping equipment once I got there from one of the hypermarkets in Muscat called Carrefour. I only paid in total about £34 for the whole lot ( tent, sleeping bag, pillows etc.). You will need to book at least a night in a hotel for the first day you arrive, so that you can go in to the city and buy what you need before you go. I stayed in the Holiday Inn, which was comfortable, but not necessarily one of the best in the world even though it has a five star rating.
After I had purchased my stuff, my girlfriend and friends set off. We travelled approximately 4 hours south of Muscat close to the Turtle beaches. The weather is beautifully warm during the day in February and comfortable during the night, with temperatures ranging from 30 degrees C to 14 Degrees C on a night.
The turtle beaches are truly astonishing. You can apply for a permit to the beaches when you first arrive in Muscat, so that when you go down you can arrange at the tourist office for a guide to show you the beaches and the turtles. To see a 500 kilo turtle, approximately 7 times your own weight struggle up the beach to lay the eggs, and then reach the sea again to swim so freely and elegantly, was so beautiful. There is also a weird and wonderful marine life in oman, with dolphins to box fish. Fishing off the coast was one of my great hobbies lazing off the beach, and you will be suprised how much you catch!!
The wadis or intermittent rivers are absoloutlety gorgeous too! Oman being predominantly desert, seeing an almost oasis amongst these maginificent rugged mountains is a real treat. I visited wadi shab, which when you reach the top, hides a hidden waterfall within a cavern! What a sight!
I highly recomment Oman to you. I am sorry that I cannot really describe it in words, but its the best holiday I have ever been on. If your an adventurist like me, you will LOVE IT! Contact your local travel agent for more info.
