Once known for the leper colony in Culion, Palawan is fast becoming a mecca for the adventurous tourists whether local or foreign. Scuba-diving or simply snorkeling in the clear warm waters of the Palawan beaches can give one a feeling of enchantment only found in fairy tales. What with the countless species of colorful tropical fishes and the sight of the virgin forests. Food is at its freshest and cheapest. People in general is friendly and accommodating. But...
The bandits are having their heyday at the expense of local and foreign tourists. It seems that kidnapping is getting to be big business for the outlaws in the guise of being rebels. The government, aside from giving out warnings and empty threats to those criminals, seems to be doing no action.
However, Palawan beaches in general are safe with their tight security and continuous monitoring by the military intelligence group. It is a must to hire a local guide, not for the accuracy of directions but for safety purposes. It has been said that the locals are too friendly and that the bandits won't really spoil the thriving tourism industry.
Getting confused? And so am I. Perhaps Mr. Dick Gordon, the amiable Philippine secretary of tourism can do some explaining.
