Advantages: Beautiful architecture, lots of culture, good pubs, loads to do, nice bars Disadvantages: Very crowded in summer, can be v.rough at night, not great for clubbing
..., and is well worth going on - it is 54 metres high (almost as high as the Minster but without the stairs!) and on a sunny day, you get amazing views over York. Adults go for £6, children for £4. You can also book a private pod for £44, or a VIP pod with a glass of champagne for £65 (this would be great for a special occasion, I'm trying to think of excuse to do that!)
Castle Museum
Another fantastic, entertaining interactive museum, attractions include reconstructed Victorian and Edwardian street scenes, (with a super-cute, old-fashioned sweet shop and PostOffice!) The displays include beautiful Victorian dolls houses, a chocolate exhibit, and a Saxon helmet uncovered in the Jorvik dig, (which was almost crushed by a digger!) A good all-round family attraction.

Advantages: always something to do/go/see. Cheap shopping Disadvantages: far too cheap! easy to spend every penny.
...New York is truly fantastic. Do buy a city guide before you go and plan what you want to see and what you want to avoid as there is so much to do it is better to have a definite plan with built in options. I used "NewYork for Less" guide and found it very well laid out and informative with a built in discount card.
If you are planning to see the Statue of Liberty then make this the first sight to see because after visiting the Empire State Building and the World Trade Towers, the Statue of Liberty looks truly like an ornament. I would even go so far as to say the view of it from the riverboat to Ellis Island (highly recommended) and from a helicopter ride is sufficient. A helicopter ride is a must, especially if you have never been in before - the sights are amazing.
Do take in a show on Broadway, worth it for the experience but...

...little Italy, China Town, around the Brooklyn Bridge, and also over towards Ground Zero, as well as in the park, around Times square, and the Wall Street area. Each of these places has it's own feel to it, and is interesting in it's own right. The mix of people on the streets is more varied in some places than others, but between all these areas, I felt I was seeing some of the true diversity of NY.
I felt totally safe as a lone female in all these places, and in general in New York (though avoid the park at night) and would have no reservations about travelling alone there in the future.
Food
Being on a tight budget restrcted my opportunity to sample a lot of the food on offer in NY, but there is a lot of it. I had a bagel, which was lovely, and also went to a deli to get a sandwich with a crowd of office workers. Street food...

The New Yorker is in an excellent midtown location with the subway (lines A, C & E) literally steps outside. Being on the corner of 8th Avenue and 34th Street this meant good access to Macy's, Empire State Building, Madison Square Gardens and the... more
Postmodernism, eh? It's a funny old bag of fish. Even the holier-than-thou critics don't quite seem to know what it's all about. They argue whether it's
a) a revolt against modernism,
b) a progression of modernism,
c) both of these and more
or d) more
If you want to stay in Central New York then this is the hotel to book. It is actually IN Times Square! It's a huge modern hotel with over 45 floors so some of the views are great. There is a bar at the top which is a lovely place to have a drink,... more
