The capital city, Doha, has around 600,000 inhabitants mostly made up of expats from the Phillipines, Indian subcontinent and europe. You need to apply for a visa and arrange for one of the many hotels here to sponsor your stay in Qatar. Best time of year for a visit is in the 'Not Summer' season ie. Men should avoid 'muscle tops' and short shorts. Alcohol is available in the major hotels, but a tad expensive. Shopaholics will love the diversity of goods available and the chance to haggle in the many 'souqs'. Petrol is currently 12pence per litre and cigarettes are around £8.00 per 200. All in all, its a quiet place for a holiday and a paradise for some of us who work here!
Advantages: Tax free, Friendly, Beautiful Place Disadvantages: HOT, HOT, HOT
I travelled to Qatar earlier this year to visit my Dad, I was a bit nervous as I had never travelled to the Middle East but I honestly don't know why. It is quite a journey to get there and when you do you need to apply for a visa but if you are one of those people who don't need the drink and want something different this is the place to go. Qatar's capital city is Doha and has some wonderful looking hotels both interior and exterior. The shopping ... ...of designer shops such as FCUK, Quicksilver, United Colors of Benneton, and all prices are tax free so its so cheap.
The food in Qatar is also a bonus, if you like currys they have some marvelous restaurants and all at cheap prices. We had a banquet meal between 4 of us and it cost all of £15 pounds including drinks. If you want to feel at home though they have the usual Macdonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut etc. but be adventurous you will thank me for it. ...

Advantages: Friendly and efficient staff Disadvantages: Flights get booked up quickly
I fly regularly to Dubai, and have travelled on a variety of airlines. Qatar Airways is generally one of the cheapest, but also one of the more decent airlines. The following links take you direct to the Qatar Airways deals pages.

I'm not surprised that the flights book up quickly (due to low cost of the flights and the good service), and I would always use them if the availability was there.
Going to Dubai involves a stop at Doha airport. It's a nice airport - some reasonable duty free shops, restaurant, etc. The stopover to Dubai isn't normally more than a couple of hours.
The actual flight is good. The economy class seats are just like economy seats on other scehdule ...
Advantages: non-stop flights to the UK from Qatar Disadvantages: cabin crew not firm enough with unruly passengers
Qatar Airways do have very modern aircraft, especially on long haul flights. However, be prepared to put up with unruly children in economy class as their parents are normally 'sitting comfortably' in Club Class! The cabin crew should try and be firmer with these 'little darlings', but the majority of them fear for their jobs as the kids parents are often influential people in Qatar. Having said this, the food is good and the crew are multi-lingual and generally efficient. Flights are usually punctual and check-in facilities are better than they used to be. Unaccompanied minors, children travelling without their parents/guardians, are looked after extremely well and are sometimes treated to a visit to the cock-pit and given small gifts. For some strange reason though, flights from UK - Qatar - UK are cheaper than Qatar - UK - Qatar. This ...
