ROMANIA

First I have to confess, maybe I repeat my self, but Romania is my birth country, despite the fact that now I'm living in Cyprus because here my hubby wants to live. All I want to do here today is to write some tips of what is Romania, where is this country, what kind of people they are making this country and not last what really deserves to be visited during a holiday. Yes, maybe you'll tell me you've already learned ...
...on anything You Don't Know (I don't want to be rude, but this is the truth, it's a very big country with hidden treasures, that nobody bothered to show them more in details or the persons they were in a visit in Romania they didn't knew where to go)

And because is a review of a country, but in the same time my experiences in this country, you can imagine will not be short, but neither super long, I hope. But because I will describe ... more

Romania: Europe's Hidden Gem

Advantages: Amazing countryside, Friendly People and still amazingly cheap
Disadvantages: It get's cold at winter, Joining the EU in 2007

Although for most Romania probably appears to be an impenetrable and somewhat undesirable destination for a holiday, I couldn't disagree more vehemently. Although prior to my travels to the far reaches of Eastern Europe, I too was a little sceptical about what I might discover. My only real knowledge of the country (barring football) was the images of the orphans in the early 90's and of the overthrowing of a rather tyrannical communist regime in ...
...democratic system, it is fair to say that the legacy of Ceaucescu still lingers in the air. Unlike it's western European neighbours Romania is trudging into the 21st century. With a mix of Bucharest's ugly concrete communist tower blocks and the maintenance of peasant traditions in the countryside, Romania is unlike most other countries moving towards the European Union. It is a country, which quite happily maintains its traditions and history despite ...

Yet more proof Jeremy Clarkson is an ignorant b*****d!

Advantages: Beautiful scenery, friendly people, very cheap
Disadvantages: Too many misconceptions from people who haven't been!

I must confess that my inspiration to write this piece was watching Jeremy Clarkson's ignorant ramblings on this week's Top Gear episode filmed in Romania, less than a week after I myself returned from living and working in the country. This isn't going to be a run-down on what there is to do in Romania, there are countless travel sites for that. Nor am I going to solely trash Clarkson's somewhat skewed views, I can save that for a thougthfully-worded ...
...with you some insights from someone who has lived in this fascinating country and seen it for what it truly is. My first hours in Romania were a total culture shock. From arriving at the newly-refurbished Otopeni airport I was transferred to my new home in a tiny Transylvanian village, along the way travelling through the suburbs of Bucharest and picturesque mountain comunes. A lot of what I saw made me uncomfortable. I was very nervous to see what ...

Not only Dracula

Advantages: very cheap,beautiful landscape,friendly peoples,many castle to visit, etc,etc,...
Disadvantages: The fact that people are poor can be maybe an disadvantage.

"Romania is rich in culture and natural resources, but it has long been one of Europe's poorest and least developed countries." I heard this often and I agree. I know that my country don't have the same "quality of life" like others countries from Europe have but It shouldn't be ignored. I am tired of trying to convince people that we have also singers, actors, television and that Romanian language is not a Slavonic language, we don't speak Russian ...
...French etc. The problem is that we was surrounded by countries like Bulgaria, Ukraine and Serbia which speak Slavonic languages so we took some words from these countries. There was an Romanian writer who said that Romania is " an island of Latinity " because is the only country from the East Europe who speaks a Latin language. When I lived in Romania I didn't remark anything strange but when I emigrated in Sweden I discovered that peoples from ...

Dracula's country

Advantages: Some fantastic areas, great food
Disadvantages: Can be overwhelming without connections

Romania can be a great place to visit for your vacation. The sites can be very amazing if you know where to look. However some areas can be very dirty and dangerous. I’ve been there three times and I have seen some terrific sites. The food is excellent when you go to the right restaurants. For the most part people over there can be very friendly but there are some dangerous places as well. There are unfortunately very few places to find someone ...
...know where you’re going very specifically you will find yourself lost without any help and, depending on the area, your wallets. The sites are fantastic in this old country. They have every thing that you will want to escape to. If you want to go to the beach there are many beaches but the most impressive area are the areas around the Black Sea. A very nice area and there are many good hotels that are seaside with good deals. This area is a ...

my 2 weeks in Romania

Advantages: Experiencing a culture so different to ours. Meeting v. friendly people
Disadvantages: Be careful of the gypsies!

Two friends and I, who are all starting our Medical course at university this year, decided that instead of taking a gap year, we would spend 2 weeks in Romania teaching English. Our courses lasted 5 or 6 years and we were reluctant to take a further year out. We looked in the Careers Library at school and one of the first pieces of paper which we looked at was by the British-Romanian Connections, advertising this teaching opportunity. None of us ...
...I am writing the article as hopefully, it will help others to decide what sort of resources to take for both teaching and everyday use, and also, safety precautions to adhere to. On 23rd July 2001, we arrived at Bucharest at 1pm (their time), the outside temperature was a sweltering 28°C and we were thankful that we had brought our summer tops. During winter however, it can get chilly. We made our way to the entrance where we hoped a coach to Roman ...

Try a Translyvannian Winter

Advantages: cheap, fun, totally lacking in airs and graces
Disadvantages: probably not best choice for expert or non-skier

each night. Moreover, unlike previous trips to Eastern Europe, I did not get ripped off once. Romanians, though mostly poor are generally very honest. In bars and shops in the resort and nearby Brasov (Romania?s second largest city), my fellow skiers and I frequently mistook the 500,000 lei note (£10) for the 50,000 one (£2). Our mistake was always corrected and the money returned. Romanians are generally very jovial and friendly people; once you get passed their steely reserve. THE SKIING Poiana Brasov has a well-deserved reputation for providing excellent instruction on the slopes for beginners. It is in fact probably only really suitable for beginners and lower intermediates since the number of challenging runs are limited. Our instructor Vicky (a man!) inspired great confidence in us all from the start. There were four hours ...

BUNAC - Camp Counsellor Programme

Advantages: Amazing summer experience, cheap, visa sorted
Disadvantages: You have to go home at the end!

. The application was similar to a job application form; you were prompted to sell yourself! It was mandatory to have some child care experience and references were asked for. There was a section for special skills (such as ability to do archery, or art and craft experience) and I was asked whether I would like to be a general counsellor or one that taught a skill. I selected the general option. I was called to a local interview held in a plush hotel nearby and was quizzed about my intentions, why I wanted to go to camp and a bit about myself. In turn my enthusiastic interviewer related stories of their times at camps and explained to me what I could expect. In January 2001 I received an e-mail from the camp that had selected me. They provided me with some details on the camp, a link to their website and a packing list. You do not (generally ...
