Singapore is a clean country retaining much of its colonial background. As a tourist we were of course shown the diplomat’s grand houses.
You must not smoke on the streets unless you are huddles around one of the occasional state ashtrays. At the time of visiting I was still a smoker and I found it a strange and unsympathetic country. Because of the rigid laws one has no fear of being out and about. Of course, Raffles is the place to see.
Parts of the city, though, Chinatown, where we rode in rickshaws and Little India, which smelt overwhelmingly of opium from the many incense sticks burning in the streets, had much character.
It is strange that although I have travelled extensively in the Far East the only time I have been ill of stomach was in this clean and unpolluted city.
