Sri Lanka, the place eveyone tells you is the most beautiful island in the world, and to an extent it is. If you wish to visit be prepared for what you will find and see. The beaches and hotels are full of splendor, most are all inclusive and that is not a good thing. Sri Lanka is cheap, cheap gems, cheap everything. There is nothing that can not be bartered for. The all inclusive means that you will spend most of your time here in the complex of your hotel and miss the islands wonder.
Poverty, the island in many ways is third world or worse. People will beg you for money all the time, I recommend buying sweets from the locals, they get some money and the children want sweets more than money. My other advice is take some spare currency from home, Sterling and Dollars are best, even 10p, they will love you and if out traveling will show you the parts of Sri Lanka that the tourists don't see.
On the trip take in the following as a must, Punnewella Elephant Orphanage, Kandy, Sigiriya and the Turtles that are found on the South East coast.
Find spice farms, and buy all you want it is so cheap. Be prepared for the craziest driving in the world, they mount pavements, and drive 4 a breast to get somewhere although most of the roads are dirt tracks. Its an adventure more than a holiday, and I recommend it to anyone.
All the reports on the Tamals are true but they will not bother you or harm you, there were 10 bombings when I was there for the millenium and it never spoilt a thing. Go and enjoy but go with the belief that you want this adventure rather than you need a break.

Advantages: Keep this in mind next time an evil tortoise threatens YOUR village Disadvantages: Not one for the big tour groups - this place is tiny inside
