Approaching by air, my first thought was "Wow! It's fantastic" - the initial reality of the ColomboPegasus Beach hotel was some somewhat different especially the approach road through the local tip. However, it got better as our tour got under way.
Anyone worried by tales of the civil war take heart - Colombo airport is probably about the most secure there is with complete baggage searches (by hand, not x-ray) and is surrounded by army checkpoints.
The war does takes its toll and there are northernmost limits above which tours companies refuse to tread.
We were on a historic tour arranged by First Choice but entirely conducted by a government guide, who was brilliant, not just in knowing his stuff, but in little things like going on ahead to secure the best lunch tables for his group, e.g when visiting the famous elephant orphanage.
Sri Lanka really is a beautiful place, with gentle people and amazingly good value food - we still had to buy lunches and started getting quite upset if it came to more than £2. No one suffered from any kind of travellers tummy, at least not in my earshot.
Sri Lanka did however introduce a new word to my vocabulary -
"Templed-out"
