I spent a great six months of my life working as an English teacher in Sri Lanka, and i hope i can maybe inspire others to go and see this country. Before i left i had no ideas as to what to expect.
Sri lanka is very humid and it takes a bit of getting used to the constant heat, usually around the low 30's. The best ebaches are along the south westcoast, hikkaduwa and mirissa are both very beautiful and have accomodation on the shore. Hikkaduwa is the more lively of the two, and has a great guesthouse called neelas, i was there three weeks and they still email me, they were great hosts! There are many buddhist temples in sri lanka, many that are breathtaking, see the lonely planet guide to sri lanka. I remember one in anaradapurah, we had to walk barefoot as it is religiuos place and our feet got burned!!
A typical day would begin at 6am, where breakfast ranges from fresh bread and some tea( You havent lived until you try sri lanka tea!!) to a mild curry! Lunch is usually around about 1pm, again a curry although there are more european type menus available if you want in some places. Dinner is around 6pm, when it gets dark again! Of course this is going to be another curry! The beauty of a Sri lanka curry is that the they are full of taste and are totally unique because all the ingredients are fresh.
trains in sri lanka are very cheap, but if you have a journey longer than 30 minutes i would advis going first class, as second class you will be like a sardine and it is very common for pickpokets to be on trains. Train from Kandy to Colombo, a 3 hour journey costs about £1,first class. Public transport is not recommended at all, it ios extremely cheap but avoid it, the drivers work 13 hour shifts and in the heat they are very prone to being a bit erratic, far safer and comfortable to use the private busses which cost about the same as a train first class and are airconditioned and you normally get a seat. Tuk tuks are great for small journeys, but agree a price with the driver BEFORE you get in!
It is really hard to give you an overall idea of Sri lanka without going on a bit! the main points i must mention are ; -cricket is huge and locals love to see you try! -the fruit is unbelievable, pineapples are full of juice and mongoes- i can taste them now!!! -getting around is easy, it is a small country and busses are very regular. -Be aware of mosquito, have a net for sleeping and you'll be fine! -the beaches are superb, and bars are always close so you can have a beer in the sun, and im told the surf is good too! -Lots of shopping to be done in the market! Elephants at pinnewala elaphant orphanage! the memories!!
I can't wait to get back to sri lnaka this summer, ill maybe see you there!
