Last month I went to see some attractive places in Matara with my family. Approximately 5 hours was taken to reach there. Road to Matara is fallen along the coastal area. **************************** In Matara town we could see the Star Fortress where a Dutch captain stayed. This structure takes a shape of a Star. It has two wide doors to enter to the fortress and there is a moat around it. We spent about 1 hour there and went to see the "Weherahena Temple". **************************** Weherahena Temple is 8 km away from Matara town and it may be identified as a Buddhist shrine and cultural centre.
The most outstanding feature of the Buddha statue at this temple is serene and compassionate expression and its calming effect on pilgrimages. There are so many attractive paintings decorated on the interior walls of the entire temple and they are depicting various JATHAKA STORIES. The Buddha statue conveys to us the incredible talents of the early sculpture. *************************** Then we reached to Dickwella. In Dikwella 20 km away from Matara there you can find the Sri Lanka's largest Buddha statue at the "WEVURUKANNALA Temple" along Dickwella - Beliatta road. This temple is dominated by an image of a seated Buddha. This Sri Lanka's statue is 150ft high.
There are three separate parts at the Wevurukannala Viharaya (Temple). First part is almost 250 years old. Next part is of great significance. Punishments are depicted if you do not follow the path to enlightenment. Other significant part is the Seated Buddha that is as high as an eight storey building. We could climb that building and reached the back of the statue head. There was a small area covered by glass and we could see inside of the head of the statue. There were hundreds of small Buddha statues. Walls of the temple show lots of events in the Lord Buddha's lives.
Wevurukannala Viharaya is a more popular and important temple and also a popular tourist spot. The most important aspect of this temple is that it consists of a gigantic statue of the Buddha in a seating posture.
The largest clock in Sri Lanka is also at Wevurukannala Viharaya. That clock was made by Mr. W.Elaris Silva in 1926. Reverent Bajjama Siri Saddhatissa has bought it for Sri Lankan Rs 3000 and donated to Sri Vaijayanthi Library for exhibit. Ringing of this clock is the uniqueness. *************************** Finally we went to Kudawella 8km away from Dickwella. The world famous "HUMMANAYA" Blow hole is located there. We had to park our van nearly 100m away from Hummanaya and had to go along a narrow path. Many people were selling dried fish, batter fried fish, pickle and Wade.
There were souvenir shops with a variety of local handicrafts and ornaments made of sea shells and marine findings. We reached to the rocky shores and waited patiently for the great swells coming in from the ocean to hit the caverns formed naturally under the rocks.
When they are filled to capacity, the pressure causes the water to escape through a small hole from a big fountain. It is amaaaaazing. Rough and high waves push water into the bottom and force it through a hole at the bottom of the rock with a high pressure. The water is blown high into the air with a sound of a blow whistle. Actually you must be patient to see it.
We really enjoyed with the attractive sceneries and places. It was really ama……zing. Gain this experience as soon as you come to Sri Lanka.
