Over Seven thousand Islands of choice

Advantages: Warm, fun, lots of Choice and friendly people
Disadvantages: Long Listance(but I think that is an advantage), Polluted cities, crime & corruption

How to describe and give an opinion on over 7000 islands? This is the task I have set my self with this effort'. I have just returned from spending a month in the Philippines, during which time I took notes on what we did and where we stayed. This is the first of the opinions to come from this trip, my aim is to give you a little background to the Philippines, some general information and some ideas on what life is like there. Lookout for my tips ...
...I start to sound like a travel brocher, but I will tell you the bad along with the good.

The Facts

The Philippines are an archipelago of 7100+ islands set in the South China Sea. The two main Islands are Luzon in the north and Mindanao in the south, between these two are the thousands of other islands in the chain that are collectively referred to as Visayas. The Philippines has a tropical climate, Hot and humid all ... more

A beautiful out of the way travel destination

Advantages: Very diverse culture and landscape, plenty to see, not awash with tourists
Disadvantages: Tourist resorts and tour arrangements often of mediocre quality, difficult travel at times

The Philippines is a rather curious archipelago in the South China Sea, comprising an interesting, idiosyncratic mix of cultures that hold a special charm for many. Magellan discovered the islands in 1521, and since then, despite the subsequent death of Magellan at the hands of natives, the Philippines was a Spanish colony until the 1896-1898 revolution. The Filipino insurgents hardly had time to rest on their victory, though, before American forces ...
...in defeat for the revolutionaries, and American occupation was to continue until eventual independence in 1946. Centuries of Spanish rule mean that Roman Catholicism is extremely powerful in the Philippines. The Philippines is, in fact, the only predominantly Christian country in the whole of Asia. Thus, one is treated to a multitude of beautiful churches and chapels, some dating back to Spanish rule, and a wealth of provincial festivals coinciding ...

Our 7,107 Islands

Advantages: Countless of wonders in a small country
Disadvantages: Presence of criminal and dissidents

In the western part of the vast Pacific Ocean, below China and above Indonesia, lies a mystical place called PHILIPPINES - a country composed of 7,107 islands (count depends on the level of the sea tide). Landing in the busy Ninoy Aquino International Airport located at the mainland of Metro Manila, one can go direct to an island of his choice. For the uninitiated, it is recommended not to roam the city alone lest one is a real adventurer. Metro ...
...beggars, persistent vendors and all other undesirable elements that your imagination can invent. This is not to count the terrible heat brought by the long summer and the pollutants, from smoke to noise. But before you get discouraged, the picture is not that too bad, really, there are lots of good points too. COUNTRYSIDE. You will find the opposite atmosphere in the suburbs. Just an hour's ride is the Hot Springs of Laguna province which offers ...

Best kept secret in the far east

Advantages: english speaking, very cheap, very friendly, great food
Disadvantages: can be hot, some polution

What a great place the Phills is, Ive been to well over 50 countries and ive never fallen in love with a place like this, Forget Thailand, the Philippines is 10 times the place. Everyone speaks English, even the newspapers are in english, the food is great and the people so very friendly and helpful. Inexpencive? you have no idea, a taxi in the capital, about £1 anywhere you want to go, a meal for 4 in top quality restauant? about £10 with drinks!! ...
...of the globe, Italian, french,Japanese, chinese, Vietnamise, and, of course, the local food which is always fresh and tasty. The beach resorts are very very good indeed, Boracay and Cebu are lovley but Palawan stands out, A top quality resort with its own beaches, water sports , restarunts and bars should cost about £40 per night, and we are talking large private bungalows with massive modern bathrooms ,views of the sea and totally private, same thing ...

Well worth a visit

Advantages: Friendly, English-speaking people
Disadvantages: Dont expect anything to be done that quickly

The Philippines is a bit off the beaten track as far as British tourists are concerned, this largely being due to the amateurish efforts of the Manila Dept. of Tourism to promote it, but it is well worth a visit. The people are some of the most friendly to be found anywhere, and with its christian background and over forty years of american rule, it is probably the most 'westernised' of all the south east asian countries. Visit the capital, Manila, ...

The PHILIPPINES

Advantages: more people from other countries like to visit!
Disadvantages: crisis, lack of food

I've been living in the Philippines almost 25 years and this is really good country for me!!! Why? In this place, it's not so cold there in the Philippines.. The climate is not bad. However, if a month goes to December! I'll tell you that it's cold there in the Philippines and I really feel it.. Summer month are March until June... When July comes until November, the climate is good... January have a bit cold and February..So much for that! You know ...
...really good to see. Filipino Paradise

Advantages: Perfect white sandy beaches, good variety of accommodation, restaurants and bars
Disadvantages: A bit over-developed in places

Boracay is known as The Philippines' most beautiful island and regularly features in top ten lists for 'The best beaches in the world'. Being so highly rated, I decided I had to visit it in June 2008, to decide for myself if it really is that good. Getting there In order to get to Boracay, you have to fly from Manila to either Caticlan or Kalibo. There are many flights every day to both airports with various different airlines. The cheapest offers seem to be with Asian Spirit and Cebu Pacific. I flew with Asian Spirit and the short 1 hour flight was fine with them. From Caticlan, you take one of the many small boats across to Boracay and there is a new jetty on the south of the island now to make things easier (before this was built you had to climb out of the boats directly on to the beaches). If you fly to Kalibo then you ...

a true paradise beach

Advantages: very very cheap, clean and lots to do
Disadvantages: crowded at Xmas time, with Russians

The beach at Boracay is rated one of the top ten in the world, and it deserves it. The sand is pure white and clean as a whistle. The Philipeans in general is ,perhaps ,the best kept secret in the far east, a great place to vacation, friendly, warm very very cheap and everyone speaks English. Boracay is a small island about 30mins flight from Manila (flight about £40 return). the airport is on a larger island a 10 min boat ride on a local outrigger gets you to the island proper. There are a large number of large hotels that take the form of beach resorts, usually with individual carbana style suits set in large well kept grounds with all the sports and at least 2 pools in house. I last stayed at the MGM resort and it was first class, large living room with TV,video plus attached fully fitted kitchen, huge bedroom and all for about ...

Bohol Island of Chocolate Hills

Advantages: Easy to tour the Island in One Day
Disadvantages: Not really recommended for Children

The easiest way to view Bohol Island is to hire an Air Conditioning L500 Taxi, which includes the driver and a full tank of fuel. The prices ranges from two thousand to three thousand pesos per vehicle, and can seat up to eight passengers. You will find these available mainly from ports of seacrafts arriving from other Island in the Philippines. Our experience started from Ubay around eleven o'clock in the morning, arriving from Bato in Leyte on a Bancas boat journey of approximately two hours, by hiring an L500 Air Conditioning Hyundia People's Carrier. There are plenty of Pantalon Pier restaurants to choose from of Filipino cuisines and are very reasonable in prices. We had two plates of fried chicken and two large plates of rice for about seventy pesos between four adults and two children. The children ages of my daughter was ...
