You can do the deed much more quickly these days, get married that is. Not, it has to be said, with a 24-hour or 24-minute turnaround, such as Las Vegas, but then, who would have the good taste to go to tobago to be married and then expect to do it with such unseemly haste?
I choose to get married in Tobago in September 2000. We spent three weeks in Tobago, choosing to get married in the middle of our holiday; it is a good idea to allow at least a week of romantic anticipation in Tobago first, and anyway you need to be a resident in the country for three full days (not including day of arrival) in order to qualify for a marriage license, and the paperwork will take another three days or so.
Tobago has a professional wedding organiser - Tobago Weddings and several hotels are also able to handle all the arrangements for you. We booked an all-inclusive package at the Grafton-Beach Resort (www.grafton-resort.com), the package included the basic wedding costs which infact covered pretty much everything we needed. If you plan to book a wedding like this though I would recommend you look into what is included because necessary extras can run into £100's of pounds more, for example is the marriage license costs included, the wedding bouquet, wedding cake, meal with your guests afterwards etc.
There are many different places in Tobago you can choose to marry. It can be in a church, on the beach, in a boat, under a waterfall, underwater - wherever you want more or less (allowing for the patience and athleticism of a presiding minister!)
We choose to marry on the beach next to the grounds of the Grafton Beach resort where we stayed. The Grafton beach resort is situated on Stonehaven Bay on the West coast of Tobago. It is a magnificent sweep of sand shared also with sister hotel Le Gran Courland.
We married in the evening around 6 pm, because it is so hot during the day you would bake togged up in all that wedding gear. It was absolutely perfect as once the ceremony had taken place and some photos taken, we enjoyed the most perfect sunset.
The hotel wedding co-ordinator ensured that the day went without a hitch, and she was one of the most friendly and helpful people I could ever wish to meet.
Some of our family joined us for a few days before the wedding and to obviously be there for our wedding day, however inevitably there were some friends and family who could not make it for one reason or another. That is the only down-fall of getting married several thousand miles away from home.
Tobago is undoubtably one of the most unspoilt carribean islands I have visited, there are no high rise hotels and Tobago government are ensuring their beautifull lush mountainous island is not cleared away for tourism to move in
Although this op is about getting married in tobago, I can't help but mention briefly some great trips that we did whilst on the island.
- a trip to Argyll falls (I swam in the falls - that was fantastic)
- we went to Scarborough, Tobagos capital. Also an industrial port, offers some shopping, but not very touristy. We visited Scarborough several times as marriage paperwork had to be signed at the Registrars Office in Scarborough, also choose my flowers in a Florist there.
- take a boat trip out to the Nylon pool, its like a shallow swimming pool a couple of miles out to sea!
- there are some fantastic coral reefs, deep sea canyons encrusted with corals and sponges. We went snorkelling and also saw numerous colourful fish.
- For nightlife we went to Sunday school (its not what it says!) This is where you'll find Tobagion nightclubs and lots of steel bands. All the locals come here on a sunday because thats when they get paid so they're all out to have a good party. We joined in and had a fantastic time.
Well I have so much more to say about this wonderful island, but I think I will have to do separate ops for each topic so please watch this space!
