It was October. We couldn't face the Red Sea again - and despite the bombings in Sharm there weren't any good bargains. We'd already spent too much money on other holidays last year so we wanted 'cheap and different'. Tobago was the solution and it worked out really well.
We booked with Regal Dive - www.regaldive.co.uk - who flew us over with excel airlines. I was nervous - there are some dreadful reviews of that airline doing the rounds. Honestly - no frills but not bad at all. We stayed half the time at the Toucan Inn and half at the Inn on the Bay and we dived with the World of Watersports dive centre which is based at the Hilton.
World of Watersports is an excellent dive centre. The equipment is of a high standard, the guys who run the boats and the divemasters are funny, friendly but always attentive to health and safety. The guy who runs the place is from Jersey - obviously likes little islands - and he runs a tight ship. One of the instructors is an ex Commonwealth kick boxing medalist. All pick-ups and drop offs are handled with quiet efficiency.
Now the important bit - the DIVING. It's exceptional. World of Watersports has a max of 8 divers in the water at a time and you don't see any other dive groups on the same sights. It's marvellous - you get the sea to yourself. The coral is in excellent condition, there are plenty of fish and the sea is calm and turquoise. We've dived a lot all over the world and this beats the pants off most places. Some of the virgin reef in Pemba is the only thing that comes close.
The dives are all done in the morning and the afternoon is left free to do what you want. I'd advise hiring a car - we didn't and we struggled a bit to fill our afternoons.
Practical stuff - thin wetsuits or shorties - it's warm warm warm. They say you shouldn't wear gloves but you can - some descents are down ropes so you may want to protect your hands.
On the downside - yes, it's a long way On the upside - cheap destination with lots of good offers (I think we paid about £529 plus diving - outstanding reefs, good food and drink.
A couple of points. It's not Trinidad - if you read or hear bad things about Trinidad, don't assume they apply to Tobago. It's a much quieter, gentler place. There are no direct flights from the US to Tobago - that means that it's NOT full of American divers. This isn't intended as a prejudiced comment BUT bear in mind that wherever American's like to holiday, it tends to put the prices up. Their absence keeps the prices low for the rest of us.

Advantages: Sun and warmth all year round, beautiful beaches, great for families or singles Disadvantages: Tourists tend to be ripped off with prices and you need a car to get around
