My husband and I visited Washington DC in October 2007, whilst traveling around the States. We stayed for 3 nights, at the Allen Lee Hotel. Washington DC is an interesting city. Its history is in stark contrast to its modern political face and the side that is shown in movies and on TV. What struck me immediately about Washington DC were the open spaces, not just in the parks and at the water front but also when simply walking down the street; it's a nice change from the claustrophobia of many US cities.
Because there was so much to see in Washington DC, we opted for a tour on one of the many open top buses that circle the city and surrounding area. At $39 for a 24hr, hop on-hop off pass, this was a real bargain and the best way to see everything in the city, in my opinion. From the war memorials and Arlington cemetary to the White House and the Capitol Building, everything in Washington DC is awe-inspiring because of its size and power, and also because of its significance in modern day politics and in the history of the United States.
The political buildings and museums are near each other; the shops and restaurants are separate. This makes everything easy to find, but is a hindrance when you are walking around the monuments and buildings and fancy stopping for a drink or something to eat. Luckily, there are dozens of hot dog stands dotted around, serving cold drinks and cheap snacks to keep the tourists going.
What was my favourite part of visiting Washington DC? It was the feeling of calm that pervaded the city, accentuated by the open spaces and parks. I felt calm here and it ade me want to slow down and take everything in. Very relaxing and fulfilling trip. I highly recommend a visit.
