Geneva is my hometown airport. I have used dozens of airports over the years, but I have used GVA far more than any other. (It was even one of my playgrounds as a kid - I had a pass that let me go airside whenever I wanted!)

Assuming that your first experience will be arriving, I will deal with that first. GVA has one runway, nestled up against the Jura mountains. My tip though is to take the number 10 trolley bus. Go upstairs to where the check in desks are and outside. The bus stop is at the far end of the airport, next to the station. The fare for one zone valid for an hour is 2.20 francs (about £1). One zone should be all you need if you are going to most hotels. You pay at a machine, so you will need ...

Advantages: Very easy rail access to the city and other parts of Switzerland. Disadvantages: Departure lounge cafe closes early evening. Have to pay to use ladies loo on railway platform.
After a train ride to Geneva Airport to catch an evening flight the first thing I headed for when I got off was the ladies' loo. Imagine my frustration to find that I needed a 50 Swiss cents coin to use the toilet. As I was returning home I had got rid of most of my small change. Signposting to check-in was not clear, from the train I followed the sign to Departures and ended up a couple of floors above the check-in desks. The restaurants were difficult ... ...were not clearly labelled. There was no cafeteria or fast food of the kind children like. Only a bar and restaurant open. Other cafes which might have provided a cheaper, more substantial alternative were closed. This was in the July tourist season.
In the departure lounge the shops, including Duty Free were closed and so was the cafteria. The bar had only very bland rolls, plain cheese and plain ham and a very few unappetising prepacked salads. ...

Advantages: Quickest way in to Geneva; very good, as should be expected of a Swiss airport Disadvantages: None that I can think of
...Swiss transport infrastructure public buildings, Geneva Airport is very good, if not excellent, at what you want it to be - clean, efficiently laid-out, and pleasingly designed. Although small (when compared to Heathrow or Denver, for example), it is perfectly suited for serving the city, with good rail and bus links into Geneva.
Check-in can be just a little slow - you might even have to queue for more than five minutes (!) - but this is not really ... ...small airport, it is certainly good enough. The best thing about Geneva Airport is the view on landing - richly forrested rocky hillsides sweep below the plane as it comes into land, seemingly just below the wing-tips.
All in all, Geneva is my favourite European airport, outside of Heathrow. ...

A flight from Gatwick - the only option for our recent holiday to Bermuda - meant we needed one night's accommodation near to the airport itself, to ensure we had no hold ups on the morning. As we would also need 12 nights parking I scoured the internet more
Some writers have commended the Holiday Inn for its excellent service at very reasonable prices. A look behind the scenes of the brand policy, products and pricing shows however a very different picture. Holiday Inn is in fact often more expensive than... more
