Introduction ~~~~~~~~ Geneva is located in the south-west part of Switzerland is very near to France. In fact part of Geneva airport is in France. If going on holiday to you means "cheap stuff" then Geneva and Switzerland in general for that matter is not your ideal holiday. Switzerland shares rip-off Britain prices and many things are more expensive there. The only thing that is cheaper there is petrol and fags.
Scenery ~~~~~~~~~~ The scenery in Geneva is beautiful near the lake. From the lake you can see into the Alps and see the famous Lake Geneva fountain. At night Geneva is stunning, the fountain is lit up and all the posh offices have fancy lights. (Like the ones Harrods has) On top of all that you are only a 20 minute drive to the Alps where there is more breathtaking scenery.
About Switzerland in General ~~~~~~~~~~~ Switzerland is made up of 23 cantons. These are like our counties except have much more power, for example laws are vary widely for canton to canton. So think of them more like American states. There are 4 official languages in Switzerland - German, French, Italian and Romanic. Though Italian and Romanic are only spoke in the mountains. Out of the major Swiss cities Bern (the capital) and Zurich are German speaking and Geneva is French speaking.
Some tips ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you happen to be staying in Geneva don't just stay in Switzerland! You are within walking distance of France, only 20 or so miles to Annacey which is a pretty tourist honey pot in France. And you are also fairly near to Italy. The quickest way to Italy from Geneva is via the Mont Blanc tunnel, though this is closed at the moment but it s due to re-open in October 2001. If you are going into Geneva at night the cheapest and most convenient place to park is the underground carpark, which is under Lake Geneva! Now this carpark is the poshest you will ever see. Classical music is played all around the carpark, it is graffiti free and is full of Ferraris! And in the evenings it is always possible to get a space and is also cheap in the evenings. Though in the day it's a different story. It costs 3 times as much as what it does at night and it is impossible to get a space.
Shopping ~~~~~~~~~~~ If you are a shopaholic and more importantly rich Geneva is heaven. There are flash jewellers on every corner, fancy and exclusive boutiques dotted all over the place. But if your not rich you'll have to stick to the tacky souvenir shops selling flags, penknives, cowbells and cheap watches. Even if you can't afford them its quite fun looking at watches in the jewellers and guessing how much they are. You see, they don't give prices, after all if your asking the price you obviously can't afford it. If you're a chocolate lover you will not be disappointed at the chocolate shops Geneva has to offer. There are stunning displays in the windows, I went at Easter and was truly amazed. Though if you are tempted by the magnificent displays watch your wallet because there not cheap! Though they are made with fresh cream and fresh ingredients, and they also go off fairly quick. As well as shopping in Geneva there is also the secretive banks. So if you happen to have a few million lying around put it in a Swiss bank and watch it grow and grow…
Eating ~~~~~~~~ Considering Geneva is such an important city politically (United Nations are based there, loads of international organizations, etc.) eating in Geneva is relatively cheap and a little bit cheaper than London. Though McDonalds are more expensive, a Big Mac meal will cost you £5 whereas in England I will cost you about £3. You also don't find any greasy spoons and kebab shops. The best restaurants in Geneva are in the old town, they tend to be the more genuine one. The ones in the new town are mainly big pizza chains. Restaurants in the old and new town let you sit out which is nice, especially as there not situated on roads. Most restaurants in the Old town offer a mixture of Swiss and French food, whereas those in the New town are Italian and American influenced.
Feel at home ~~~~~~~~ Geneva caters ever such a lot for people who speak English as their first language. There is an English-speaking radio station - World Radio Geneva run by the BBC. It has a mixture of English and American DJ's and plays ordinary pop music. There is also a shop in Geneva selling English books and videos. And most people in Geneva speak English. This is because there are ever such a lot of English and Americans living there.
Overall ~~~~~~~~~~ I recommend you go to Geneva, it's a lovely place. Though its not really genuinely Swiss, it's a very international city and is considered by many to be neutral grounds. Getting to Geneva is quite easy, EasyJet, British Airways and Swissair all fly there. If you consider flying there don't just look at prices for EasyJet the supposed budget airline as they are quite often not the cheapest, we recently looked at flight prices and found EasyJet to be the most expensive!
Advantages: Londoners perspective: beautiful, clean, orderly and different Disadvantages: Londoners perspective: Expensive (yes even for me!)and a little small and quiet
I have been to Geneva three times now because I have a friend who lives there. Otherwise I’m not sure it would have crossed my mind to visit. It’s certainly not one of those places on everyone’s must see list. Geneva is in Switzerland but is actually surrounded by France. It is a very unique city - a mix of European and British / American influences with people of all different nationalities settled there. And although the primary language is French ... ...Geneva could not be simpler. Most budget airlines fly there, for example Easyjet have around three flights a day from London Gatwick. The flight only takes an hour and a half and as long as you don’t travel during the peak skiing season prices are really cheap (for example £10!). The airport is not far from the city centre and the easiest way to get into town is to take one of the swanky double decker trains to Cornavin train station. Once you’ve ...

...spent a long weekend in Geneva and had a fantastic time. As you would expect there was plenty of chocolate and a number of cuckoo clocks to be found and there was so much to do. Wondering around the old town of Geneva was lovely, although I was rather disappointed with some of the restoration work which had been done on some of the old buildings, it made them look brand new. But the best part was getting out in the clean fresh air, and believe me ... ...view over the whole of Geneva and Mont Blanc the scenery was fantastic, if your not feeling so energetic you can take a cable car up some of the mountains. I also rollerbladed along the lake which was great, it's also very easy to rent bikes if you don't have rollerblades. I also took a day trip to Lausanne (about 40 minute drive from Geneva) where we rented a pedalo to go out on the lake, I highly recommend this, the view of the mountains from the ...

This is definitely the place to be at the moment, particularly if you are a UK citizen. The countryside is fabulous, and the people are really nice. Busses run on time all day, and the city is geared towards making life easy for people. There are a lot of foreigners here (non genevans), so the shops and services are very tolerant towards non swiss speaking people, making it a great place to learn french. Food is great, and plentiful and cheap, with ...

My husband & I visited Geneva last month & loved it. It's just such a big city with so much to do. We went to the Reformation museum & Red Cross museum, but there are also art museums, a watch museum and others. Cathedral is worth a visit- we went to a concert in it which was a great experience. Also visited some sights to do with Jean Calvin the Christian reformer - such as the Reformation Wall. Went on a cruise on Lake Geneva which was lovely. ... ...alps which you can visit by coach.
Hotels & restaurants can tend to be a bit pricey, but we stayed in "Hotel Central" which is reasonably priced and a nice hotel.
Most locals in Geneva spoke English so it was quite easy to get by with minimal french language abilities! ...

Advantages: Very cheap Disadvantages: Not enough destinations
I have paid more to get a train from Birmingham to London than I have done for flights abroad with Easyjet.
Every February, me and my family travel with Easyjet to Geneva airport in Switzerland to go ski-ing. Some years, we have paid as little as £14 each way to get there. Their prices are just ridiculous compared to other airlines.
The service is fantastic. We get a meal on the plane even though the flight is barely 2 hours long and it's a good one at that.
Travelling with Easyjet is just as easy as getting on the bus to go down the road. Because the seats aren't allocated, you could arrive 10 minutes before your flight to check in and then just get straight on. Admittedly, the passengers who arrive first, do board first, but in blocks of say 50, so you could still get a good seat.
The planes are comfortable, but because ...

* How to use the lifts: *
I left my house at 5am on a dark morning later in November in order to catch my lfight from Heathrow. So I was already tired before I had even got up. The journey, thankfully, went smoothly and I arrived in my company’s office in Geneva by the mid-morning where I was greeted wth an enormous list of tasks. I worked through until 9pm when those of us who were working late went out for a meal. By this time I could barely stay awake but decided to be sociable with my newly met ...
Advantages: It goes to the right place. Ish Disadvantages: Crowded, expensive
Peter Branson what were you thinking of. The railways in the UK are useless and need billions in investment. There are no fast tracks, the tracks that exist were built 100 years ago and are in the wrong place. Want to go across country, go via London.
No thanks.
I used Virgin trains routinely, but not any more. On the mainline service from Liverpool to London, they suck. Crowded, unpleasant, old and with a pricing structure that is positively Venetian in its complexity. I can fly to Geneva AND get a train half way across Switzerland more cheaply than I can take a train in my own country.
Advice to rail users: go by plane.
